I sensed that one was coming. They reported several weeks ago that he was gravely ill.
I liked Walter Cronkite's presence in delivering the news, but also respected him because after he stepped away, he was not afraid to call out the news media for sensationalism and ethics issues. He believed in an objective news media.
He broke the news of a lot of famous stories over the years, from the Kennedy and Martin Luther King assassinations to man setting foot on the moon to the end of the Vietnam war and more. But perhaps the one moment I will always remember Walter Cronkite for the most was when he reported the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash in 1977. We learned that day that Walter wasn't well-versed in modern (at that time) rock'n'roll. He reported that a plane carrying the members of "Lin-yerd Skin-yerd" crashed in that bayou. He read it as it was spelled.
R.I.P.
