Alex Chilton of The Box Tops & Big Star dies at 59

Alex Chilton of The Box Tops & Big Star dies at 59.

Alex Chilton was one of the most iconic vocalists and musicians of the 60s & 70s.

As lead singer for the Box Tops, Chilton enjoyed at the age of 16 a number-one international hit, "The Letter." The Box Tops went on to have several other major chart hits, including "Cry Like a Baby", "Soul Deep", "Neon Rainbow", "Choo Choo Train", "I Met Her in Church", "Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March", "I Shall Be Released", "Turn On A Dream", and "You Keep Tightening Up On Me".

After The Box Tops split, Alex Chilton went on to form the influential power pop rock band Big Star with Chris Bell, Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel.

Over the last few years, Alex reformed The Box Tops with four of the five original members and they were touring around the U.S. as well as a reformed Big Star was also doing shows.

I have recently been discussing maybe bringing The Box Tops into the area for a show and had been in discussions with their management. What a shame another great entertainer dies way too young.

Big Star has a lot of great tunes. Guess he was looking at doing a reunion tour. Too bad.
