Thanx, kayla. But clearfield is too far. I'm looking, preferably, for someone from Altoona area. Maybe even state college ...

Joe Tirpak teaches at Music Haven in the Geistown Cloverleaf section of Johnstown when he is in town. Joe is a fantastic guitar player and teacher who can play any style and a super nice guy. Tell him Duaine sent you.

What styles of music do you like?

Post by Mysterytrain »

Just curious, what styles of music do you like? Do you have any experience so far? Acoustic or electric?

I been playing off and on for a quite a few years. I never really learned a full song yet, and I don't really play anything, just basic fingering type stuff of whatever comes to my head, and bits and peaces of songs. I can also read Tab, slowly.

Styles I like are mainly blues, jazz, and country. But I listen to everything, and would like to learn more than one style. That way I can broaden my ability. One thing I always wanted to learn was improvising. But to know how to do that you have to have a basic concept of scales and the like.

I used to know the basic scaled pretty good, after a refresher they should come back to me pretty easy ...

Basically, I guess I can say that I am not a beginner player, but also not an advanced player either. I learned some small things and didn't go any further than that ... Maybe a step above beginner because of what limited knowledge I have, but also because of knowing some of the basics.

I was just thinking of finally getting lessons because I always wanted to play in a band and know that I'm not nearly good enough to be in one yet. I think a lot of the reason I played all these years and not really learned anything was because of all the time I listen to my dad and brother play, knowing that I could never get that good. Well, I want to be that good now ..

I think I should also add that my all time favorite guitar player is David Gilmour. He is the main reason I picked up a guitar. His style is something that I really dig ..

I like 80's hair band stuff, heavier stuff like Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Pantera. I play a little country too. I've been playing for 24 years and still suck, imo. I should be better than what I am for playing as long as I have. I'm not a very technical player, my solo style is more Angus Young and Gilmore (Comfortably Numb is one of my favorite solos to play). I see these young kids just shredding and go "Damn, I wish I could play that well at that age." Anyway.

Yeah, I look at the past and wish now that I would have taken it more serious.

I would love to be taught by Tim. I think he would still be too far away? I also agree that he is a great guitar player. I've seen him play on numerous occasions. you should know that, Jerry :)
