Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the July 5 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock (94.3 FM) in Altoona and Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via both stations' websites.

It was back to the mailboxes this week to catch up on some new recordings received in recent days, resulting in lots of new music hitting our airwaves! We debuted new tunes from Miss Freddye, Dave Nichols, Well Strung, Robin & Bob, Braden McDannell, Bushmaster feat. Gary Brown, X's For Eyes, Tyler Calkins and Kali Ma & the Garland of Arms. Along the way, we updated "Local Music News," dug a 1980 song from Pittsburgh's Adams Michaels Band from the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," stepped "Across State Lines" to hear a new tune from Shepherdstown, West Virginia's Betty Jo Rockwell, and reviewed Pieces Of Reason's Bipolar CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

ROADKILL - "Fifth on the 4th of July"
JACKSON MONSOUR - "July 5th"

KALI MA & THE GARLAND OF ARMS - "Something Else"

It has been a dozen years since the last time Felix & the Hurricanes have been guests on our program, but they finally make their return as guests on our next program! A lot has happened with the Hurricanes during that span, and we'll get thoughts from the band on their 2010 visit to Memphis for the International Blues Challenge, passing the 30-year milestone as a band, and what keeps making music fresh for these guys! We'll also hear tunes from their just-issued double-CD live set All Roads Lead to Cresson, and they'll bring instruments and play some songs live in the studio! Along the way, we will update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, and review Norman Nardini's Notorious CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" Hear the "Homegrown Rocker" this Sunday night (July 12) on Q94 Classic Rock (94.3 on your FM dial, or online at www.q94classicrock.com) and 105.9 Qwik Rock (105.9 on your FM dial, or online at www.1059qwikrock.com)!

In Local Music News...

Cancellations as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic continue…

The Altoona Railroaders Museum announced early this past week the cancellation of this year’s Alive at Five Summer Concert Series, citing the restrictions, challenges and health concerns due to COVID-19. The organizers are hopeful that the concerts will be able to return next year.

Prince Gallitzin State Park has pulled the plug on this year’s Apple Cider Festival due to COVID-19 concerns. The park explained that last year’s event drew an estimated 10,000 people, so crowd limits and social distancing the state’s current guidelines would have been problematic to accomplish. The festival will return next year.

Berkeley Springs, West Virginia has also cancelled their annual Apple Butter Festival slated for October. And the annual Fort Ligonier Days Festival in Ligonier has been cancelled, although a virtual festival will be presented online during that weekend.

Citing COVID-19 safety and spacing concerns, the band Hybrid Ice cancelled their scheduled July 26 performance at the Corman Amphitheater and river stage in Lock Haven. Anticipating a large turnout, the group said they did not want to have to turn people away at the gate due to limited capacity because of social distancing.

One event that will be taking place is this year's Gigaroo festival, which happens July 10-11 at the Iselin Community Park in Iselin, west of Indiana. The music begins Friday evening at 6 p.m., with performances from the bands Iron Sight, Homicide Black, Divine Tragedy, Post Traumatik, Dragline and Animus. Saturday’s music will include performances from A Common Crown, Silk9, Losing September, Transcendence, Shattered, Mr. Bonez, Blood Union, Negan and Manitari. The festival is all ages, and food trucks will be available. Admission is $20 per person.

And some news from area improvisational and jam-rocking favorites Mysterytrain…The group has announced that they will be taking the rest of this year off from performing live shows and festivals. They are instead concentrating on writing and recording some new songs in the studio, plus will be staging some live streaming events through the rest of the year. The group also hopes to announce several of their smaller Tipton area live music events during the winter months and early next year.

During this difficult time, we at the “Homegrown Rocker” encourage our listeners and area music fans to help out musicians as their livelihoods are on hold and they cannot earn their regular income. Consider visiting their websites to purchase CD’s, music downloads or other merchandise, or make a donation to their virtual “tip jars” when you see artists performing live streaming concerts.
