Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the June 12 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock!

Thanks to our guests via phone this week, as Megan Pennington and Ty Cannon - western PA's Moonshine Jasmine - joined us to discuss their career, music, live show and more! We also played tracks from the group's debut album, I'm Not Sorry! We also debuted new songs from Artese & Toad, Jaysen Gold and Raven & the Wren; also updated "Local Music News," dug a 1994 number by Pittsburgh's The Gathering Field from the archive for this week's "Local Music Flashback," and reviewed Steve Treado's Aftermath album in "The Professor's CD Corner!" (For those who missed the program, a four-part podcast of this show is available for listening or download from Q94's website, www.q94classicrock.com. Click on "The Professor's Classroom," and then scroll down to "Homegrown Rocker Podcast" and look for the four show segments marked with the date, 061222.)

We'll air back-to-back songs spotlighting area music scene dads and their kids, and several songs will feature two generations of musicians from the same family! We'll also debut a few new tunes, update "Local Music News" and dig some "Local Music Flashbacks" from the archive! In Local Music News...

A fundraiser has been organized to help out an area musician and music teacher who is battling liver cancer. The fundraiser, a cancer walk for former area drummer and percussion instructor Mark Morningstar, was organized by two of Mark’s former students who are now music instructors in Huntingdon County. Beginning on June 14 at midnight, Richard Kane and Jordan Canner will walk 54 miles, encircling Huntingdon borough at least 10 times, to raise funds and awareness for Mark’s situation and liver transplants. Mark, the former drummer for 1980s area rockers Thin Ice and other projects, was diagnosed in December with Stage 3 liver cancer, and needs a liver transplant. Members of the public are invited to join in and walk with the two men during any portion of the walk, and may sign up via a list on www.signupgenius.com under the title “Morningstar’s Liver Stars.” A GoFundMe page under that same title has been established for donations as well.

A former outdoor music venue in Claysburg will reopen later this month. Musselman’s Grove operated as a music venue during the 1900s, and hosted some major country artists during the 1940s; including Minnie Pearl, Grandpa Jones and Tex Ritter. The venue fell into disarray after staging its final show in 1973, but a three-year renovation project by Jarrett Musselman and his wife has brought back the venue. Musselman’s Grove will host former NBC “The Voice” finalist Josh Gallagher in concert on June 18 at 7 p.m., and a day-long grand re-opening concert event will happen the following Saturday, June 25, with such performers as Stephanie & the Wild Hearts, Ride The Song, Mountain City Grass, James Grove and others on the bill.

Harrisburg-based metal rockers Eternal Frequency announced this past week that they have been selected to perform ad this year’s three-day Rocklahoma Festival, which happens in Pryor, Oklahoma over Labor Day weekend. Eternal Frequency will be performing along with national performing artists Korn, Shinedown, Five Finger Death Punch, Evanescence, Cypress Hill, In This Moment, Skillet, Suicidal Tendencies, as well as numerous other independent bands and performers.

And we report some sad news from the Pittsburgh music scene, as former Gathering Field bassist Eric Riebling passed away on June 8 after a two-year battle with brain cancer. Eric was a member of The Gathering Field during their 1990s rise to prominence as a national recording group that signed with Atlantic Records. Prior to that, Eric had played bass and was a founding member of popular 1980s Pittsburgh new wave and dance band The Affordable Floors.
