Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the August 6 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

While the “Backyard Rocker” spotlights original music from area bands and artists every week, once in a while we acknowledge the reality that area musicians often need to perform cover songs in order to get booked to perform on many area stages. Some musicians view cover songs as a “necessary evil.” But cover songs can serve several beneficial purposes; they can allow artists to show creativity by being able to incorporate and interpret another artist’s song material into their own distinct signature style and sound. Covers can also allow performers to establish a context for their own original music, and reveal artists’ influences and inspirations. And being able to successfully learn and perform harder and more complex cover material can enable musicians to further hone their chops and improve their own performing skills. This week, we decided to explore cover songs, remakes and interpretations on the “Cover Song Special,” showing not only how area bands and artists can interpret familiar songs, but also how deep and widespread some performers dig to find interesting song material to perform. We heard a wide range of artists covered, from AC/DC and Blackfoot to 45 Grave, the Misfits, Abba, traditional numbers and more. Along the way, we debuted new tunes from the Bookhouse Boys and Rusty Gun Revival.

We also were joined in the studio by a band that specializes in covering 80’s hair band rock, Altoona’s Hair Force One. We got inside the band, their love of 80’s rock, their live show and more, plus heard several of the group’s covers performed live during a show at City Limits in Altoona last year. Several lucky listeners also called in to win Hair Force One T-shirts. We also updated Local Music News, and flashed back to 1990 to hear a cover song performed by Clove.

Here is this week’s playlist (the original artist is in parentheses):

HOUR ONE:

THE FLAME SKY – “Incident at Neshapur” (live; Santana)
FELIX & THE HURRICANES – “Train Train” (live; Blackfoot)
HAIR FORCE ONE – “Cum On Feel the Noize” (live, Slade [Quiet Riot])
FAT VINNY & THE WISEGUYS – “The Jack” (AC/DC)
THE BOOKHOUSE BOYS – “Beach Blanket Bloodbath” (45 Grave)
MICHAEL REICH – “Heart of Gold” (Neil Young)
RUSTY GUN REVIVAL – “Tell Old Bill” (traditional)

HOUR TWO:

SILVER SUNDAY – “Voices Carry” (Til Tuesday)
SHADES OF JUNE – “Walk Like an Egyptian/I Want Candy” (Bangles/Strangeloves [Bow Wow Wow])
HAIR FORCE ONE – “Sweet Child O’Mine” (live; Guns’N’Roses)
CLOVE – “Going to California” (2000; Local Music Flashback; Led Zeppelin)
4 DAYS DIRTY – “We Are 138” (Misfits)
THE MARAUDERS – “Astrozombies” (Misfits)
HAIR FORCE ONE – “You Shook Me All Night Long” (live; AC/DC)
STRONGHOLD – “S.O.S.” (Abba)

Next Sunday night, our guests in the studio will be Cherry Tree-based power trio Nitekast. We’ll get updated on Nitekast happenings, plus hear new songs the group recently recorded. We’ll also update Local Music News, and review a new local/regional CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” Nitekast visits the “Backyard Rocker,” next Sunday night!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

AUG. 27 – Fast Forward Special
SEPT. 17 – Jackson Monsour
OCT. 8 – Acoustic Jam Special 6

For the second year, the “Backyard Rocker” is happy to announce its partnership with “The Underground TV,” the new local/regional music television show now airing twice weekly, on WWCP-TV Fox 8 Saturday evenings at 6 PM, and Monday mornings at 1 AM on WATM ABC 23. Check out “The Underground” as it features different unsigned local and regional bands every week; and watch for “Backyard Rocker” updates on the show each week as well!

In Local Music News.

Lots of band personnel moves to report…The remaining three members of Third Standard have merged with another Indiana-based band, forming the project Slow Joe Crowe. Guitarist Joe Scott, bass player Andy Heinze and drummer Manny Barbezzini have joined up with singer/guitarist Bailey Allen and lead guitarist Jay Moreau.

Billy & the Inmates have slimmed their roster and their name, following the departure of drummer and band namesake Bill Stauffer, who left the band due to career reasons. Rhythm guitarist Jerry Carnevali's son, Jared Carnevali, who has filled in on drums with the group on prior occasions, takes over as the new drummer; and the group has shortened their name to simply The Inmates.

State College Americana rock group The Rustlanders have slimmed to a four-piece with the departure of guitarist Dave Mudgett, who left the group due to their increased travel schedule. The departure was a friendly one, and Dave still sits in with the group during local State College shows. The Rustlanders plan to enter the studio to begin recording their debut CD in early fall.

Former No Dice frontman Jimmy Skinny has taken over singing duties with the band Signal Lost.

The Harrisburg-based band The April Skies have parted ways with drummer Mark Tritico. A new drummer is being sought.

The band 1 Way, featuring former members of The Rudys, is seeking a new lead singer. Interested singers may inquire by visiting the group’s website, www.1way4rock.com.

And the “Backyard Rocker” sends out sincere get well wishes to two area musicians who are undergoing medical procedures. Opposition singer Mike “Iceman” Bryant and Jeff Renner, better known as solo performer “Lone Wolf,” are or will be logging hospital time in the next few weeks for separate medical matters. We wish both musicians speedy recoveries.
