Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the December 3 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

Some of my favorite editions of the “Backyard Rocker” occur when I can get inside the minds of those imaginative musical creators who step outside the box and throw out the rulebook when it comes to music. Enter this week’s guests…Thanks to area musical adventurer John Charney (www.johncharney.com) and Mike Davis (Hi-Tyde), for an interesting two hours! We discussed John’s adventurous new solo album, Be Water (which Mike contributes some drum work on), heard several compositions from the album, and gave away several copies of the album to lucky listeners. We also updated Local Music News, debuted new tunes from Officer Roseland and Mystic Knights, and reviewed the new album by Kyx guitarist/singer Bill Ferrell, Biker’s Prayer, in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” (The review can be viewed on Q94's website, www.wbxq.com.)

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

THE FLAME SKY – “The Price You Pay”
ROADKILL – “Santa Claus Is A Big Fat Jerk”
JOHN CHARNEY – “American Swine”
HALESTORM – “The Hand”
JOHN CHARNEY – “Sojourn”
OFFICER ROSELAND – “Wrist Bizness”

HOUR TWO:

JOHN CHARNEY – “Pre-Choice”
MYSTIC KNIGHTS – “She’s My Baby”
JOHN CHARNEY – “Wo Ooh Oh”
BILL FERRELL – “Borrowed Time”
JOHN CHARNEY – “Girl Before A Mirror”
JOHN CHARNEY – “Ode to Krystle”

Next Sunday night, we’ll be checking in via phone with eastern PA-based musician Sterling Koch. Two years ago, Sterling suffered a debilitating injury, a herniated disc in his neck, which forced him to abandon playing a conventional six-string guitar on a full-time basis. Sterling switched to a new instrument, an eight-string lap steel guitar. Sterling has just released his second lap steel album, Steelin’ Home. We’ll hear tracks from the album, and get Sterling’s thoughts on his new music. We’ll also check on Local Music News, and review another new local CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” Sterling Koch on the “Backyard Rocker,” next Sunday night!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

In Local Music News…

We have some more holiday season benefit concerts in the coming weeks to report. First, next Saturday night, Dec. 9, Aldo’s in Juniata will be presenting their second annual Toys For Tots benefit concert. This Toys For Tots benefit will feature a heavier rocking flavor, with performances from Second Offense, Choking Faith, Suicide Switch and other bands to be announced. Admission will be $5 or a new, unopened toy of equal or greater value, with all money and toys going to the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys For Tots program to help out needy area children and families this holiday season.

Then, coming up on Saturday night, December 16, a benefit in Johnstown will take place to help out the St. Vincent DePaul Society Family Kitchen. The show will happen at Katie’s Place, and will feature the bands Pelt, Pivot and The Embalmed.

And on Saturday night, December 23, the next installment of the One Voice Musical Showcase will be taking place at Aldo’s in Juniata. This edition of the Showcase, which showcases local original-geared bands, will feature the bands Lies, Inc., The Embalmed and a third band to be named. The show will begin at 9 PM. Donation is $5, with proceeds going to the American Rescue Workers.

On Tuesday, December 12, local hard rockers 4 Days Dirty take their next step in trying to win a million dollar recording contract courtesy of the Bodog Battle Of The Bands. 4 Days Dirty will travel to the State Theatre in Washington, DC to face eleven other bands, and try to punch their ticket to Los Angeles for the next round of the battle. Tickets for the Dec. 12 battle can be obtained by 4 Days Dirty band members or through their Myspace page. For more information about the Bodog Battle Of The Bands, visit the website www.bodogbattleofthebands.com.

Felix & the Hurricanes are going to prison again starting on December 5. The group will again be entertaining captive audiences as they tour select State Correctional Institutions through December and January. Unlike past years, though, the group has mixed in several local appearances along the way, so area fans and Hurricaniacs don’t go into withdrawal. To find out the Hurricanes’ local appearances during the prison tour, visit their website, www.felixandthehurricanes.com.

A change behind the drum kit of local heavy metal band Condemned Existence. Terry Gardner takes over drum duties, replacing Cody Kensinger, who had to leave the band due to job and school responsibilities.

After nearly two years out of action, the Clearfield County-based rock band Bleech is returning with a name change. The group’s new name will be Private Property. The group just performed one of their first return gigs this past Friday night, opening for Lies, Inc. at Bar 53 in Coalport.

We at the “Backyard Rocker” wish speedy get well wishes to FedUP guitarist Dave Charlton. Last weekend, while FedUP performed their set at the Toys For Tots Benefit Concert at City Limits, a leg and back injury that Dave suffered in a car accident a decade before suddenly flared up badly, and within hours, Dave had to undergo emergency surgery to repair herniated vertebrae in his lower back. Dave faces up to two years of recovery before he is fully healed; we wish him a speedy recovery.
