Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the January 7 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

Thanks to our first guests of the New Year, Altoona-based power pop/rock band The Lampshades (www.myspace.com/thelampshades). We met the band members, and got acquainted with their unique style and sound, which underscores garage-styled hard rock with various 60’s influences, including British Invasion, surf rock, pop and more. We heard numerous tracks from The Lampshades’ latest CD, Surprise!, and the group brought acoustic instruments and played two songs live on the air. We also updated Local Music News, and debuted new songs from Signal Lost and The Overthrow.

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

WISKERBISKET – “Just Like”
THE MARAUDERS – “Rhythm Fix”
THE LAMPSHADES – “Separate Ways”
GRADE E – “Emmett”
THE LAMPSHADES – “One More Time”
THE FLAME SKY – “The Price You Pay”
THE LAMPSHADES – “Girl From Another State” (performed live on the air)
THE LAMPSHADES – “Magic”
SOUND DRIVEN – “Antelopium”
SIGNAL LOST – “Hideaway”

HOUR TWO:

BACKSTREET LAW (TIL DECEMBER) – “Falling”
JULIAN FIST – “Fly Away”
THE LAMPSHADES – “What’s Your Favorite Drink”
THE OVERTHROW – “Read Me”
THE LAMPSHADES – “Yen-Lo” (performed live on the air)
THE LAMPSHADES – “Could Be Something Good”
LOVE.HATE.FEAR – “Silence”
THE LAMPSHADES – “Hot Water Rebellion”
THE LAMPSHADES – “Hide Behind The Telephone”

Next Sunday night, our guests will be the Virginia-based band Love.Hate.Fear (which features a local connection, Carrolltown-based drummer T.J. Skrisky). We’ll get to know the band members, and hear tunes from the group’s forthcoming debut CD. We’ll also hear from other area bands and artists, and review John Charney’s new solo album, Be Water, in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” Love.Hate.Fear visits the “Backyard Rocker,” next Sunday night!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

JAN. 21 – Fleshcoat feat. Dr. E

In Local Music News…

The future of Lewistown-based rock band Wiskerbisket is in the air. Singer Doug Snook has announced that he is stepping away from the group to devote more time to family and his personal life. The group is currently seeking a new singer, but may reform under a new name if a new singer isn’t found by the time Wiskerbisket plays their last currently-scheduled show later this month. Any interested singers are invited to contact the group via their website, www.wiskerbisket.com.

Former Nevermoure/Vs. the Earth drummer Shawn Hocherl has hooked up with a new band. Shawn has joined four other Baltimore area musicians to form a new group called The Name. The Name starts playing in the general Baltimore area next month, and Shawn has expressed hope about bringing the group to the Altoona area to perform sometime soon.

The Harrisburg-based rock band Herbie has found their new member, guitarist and singer Andy Mowatt. Andy replaces George Griffo, who left the group late last year.

Two former members of Sweet Pea Felty have formed a unique new band project. Drummer Kevin Thomas and singer/keyboardist Chris Novak have formed Barnfunk. The group performs original songs and classic rock covers, and just played their first show this past Thursday night in the Harrisburg area.

And a date has been announced for the third annual Jeff Wallack Memorial Benefit Concert. This year’s show will take place on Saturday, March 31st at Aldo’s in Altoona. The show, held in memory of popular local guitarist Jeff Wallack, will feature performances from a few bands, including The Flame Sky, along with a jam session. More details about the show will be announced soon.
