Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the March 4 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

In early March, 1998, Q94’s “Backyard Rocker” first took to the airwaves; an hour show introducing Central Pennsylvania listeners to the wealth of musical talent nestled right here in our own backyard. The show expanded to two hours a year later, and we have been going strong ever since! This night, we celebrated nine years of the “Backyard Rocker” with an action-packed three-hour special! We featured show highlights from the past year of the program, from some of the bands and artists who performed live on the show in the past year. We also gave away Millennium Music Conference prize packs (left over from last week), featuring several CD’s, a Pennsylvania Musician Magazine beverage coozie and more. We updated Local Music News, and debuted new tunes from the Victory In Heaven Band, Donnie Iris and Robert Peckman.

And as they were the first live band guests to appear on the “Backyard Rocker” shortly after it hit the airwaves in 1998, Felix & the Hurricanes (www.felixandthehurricanes.com) have become the traditional live musical guests on the show every year for the Anniversary Special. We again got caught up on the latest Hurricanes happenings. Felix, Jeff and Bob shared thoughts on their music, their live show, their future plans, and their fan following, the Hurricaniacs. And the trio brought instruments and performed several new songs on the air; songs which are expected to be on the group’s third studio album, expected out this coming fall. The Hurricanes also contributed T-shirts to the prize pack giveaway, as well as gift certificates good at the Iron Horse Saloon in Gallitzin. And citing the Hurricanes’ performance at Classic Attitudes this past Friday night, part of Rockpage’s “Rock For The Troops” campaign; we took a moment to extend greetings and well wishes to local men and women in the Armed Forces currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan; the greetings were recorded and will be included on the “Rock for the Troops” CD’s and DVD’s. It was a busy three-hour celebration, and a fun party!

In Local Music News…

Several news items regarding the Poptart Monkeys and their present and former members tops our look at Local Music News…

First, one of the founding members of the Poptart Monkeys has left the band to begin a new project. Drummer Rob Hampton has parted ways with the group to join a new five-piece group called Rise Phoenix Rise. Replacing Rob behind the Poptart Monkeys’ drum kit is Jason Massey.

And former Poptart Monkeys singer Paul Reddon is now in a new band as well. Paul is fronting a five-piece group called Yada Yada Yada. Both Yada Yada Yada and Rise Phoenix Rise debuted onstage last night at The Coal Hole in Shamokin.

After a three-year hiatus from area stage action, the band Way Down East returned to action last weekend, opening for Bad Daze at the County Line Inn in Mount Union. The current edition of Way Down East features Paul Wilson on vocals and guitar, Charles Harr on guitar and vocals, Jamie “Horse” Gelvin on bass and Randy Wilson on drums. Randy also plays drums for Bad Daze.

Some benefit shows to talk about…The third annual Jeff Wallack Memorial Benefit show will happen on Saturday night, March 31st at Aldo’s in Altoona. The show will feature performances from The Flame Sky, Half Tempted, a jam session and more.

Another benefit at Aldo’s will take place on Friday evening, April 6th. The Callum Robbins Benefit concert will help out young Callum Robbins, the son of J. Robbins, a friend of several area musicians who produced Edison’s album back in the 90’s. Young Callum suffers from a genetic motor neuron disease called Type 1 SMA, or Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which affects the brain's ability to communicate with the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, breathing, and swallowing. The show will start at 10 PM, and feature performances from former Edison singer Ryan Tyler’s current band, The Lowercase Thieves, along with Shades of June, The Flame Sky, Divine Everlasting. Donation at the door will be $5.

A special songwriting event will be happening in the Johnstown area next weekend. On Sunday, March 18, from 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM, the Bottleworks Ethnic Arts Center in Johnstown will host a workshop for serious music writers by Master Songsmith, Paul Berkobin. The goal of the session is to further develop songwriting skills within a supportive environment. Those attending are encouraged to bring their instruments. A piano is on site at the Center. The fee for the workshop is free to Songworks members and $50 for non-memebers. Paul Berkobin will then present a concert next Sunday evening at 6:30 PM following the workshop. The event is made possible by a grant from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. Call the Center at (814) 536-5399 for information and registration.
