Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the September 2 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

The “Backyard Rocker” didn’t take a holiday this Labor Day Weekend, it was a jam-packed two hours! First, thanks to our in-studio guests, area rockers Spirit Lost (www.spiritlost.com)! We got acquainted with the band members and learned about their music and career to date; plus we heard newly recorded songs from their forthcoming CD, expected out by year’s end. And the group brought acoustic instruments and performed two songs live for us.

We also aired an interview with Bill Hocherl and Kevin Siegel of Rock For The Troops, the music scene initiative formed through Rockpage (www.rockpage.net) to gather videotaped greetings and well-wishes for local troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bill and Kevin gave us the lowdown on Rock For The Troops and their day-long free concert event next Sunday, Sept. 9, at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza.

We also updated Local Music News, and debuted new tunes from Ted McCloskey, The Nightcrawlers, The Rustlanders and Dashboard Mary. And we reviewed Vs. the Earth’s new CD, The Initiative, in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” (The review can be viewed in the “Backyard Rocker” section on the Message Board on Q94’s website, www.wbxq.com.)

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

TED McCLOSKEY - "Zombie for Rent"
THE NIGHTCRAWLERS - "Place in the Dark"
SPIRIT LOST - "Soul Seeker"
THE RUSTLANDERS - "Holdin' Out"
SPIRIT LOST - "Burden"
TONY MOLLICK PROJECT - "Likely Story"
SPIRIT LOST - "Journey of a Lifetime" (performed live on the air)
DASHBOARD MARY - "Frustrated"

HOUR TWO:

FELIX & THE HURRICANES - "Walking A Straight Line"
SPIRIT LOST - "Pieces of a Stained Glass Mind"
VS. THE EARTH - "Who He'll Be Tonight"
SPIRIT LOST - "Alone"
WAY DOWN EAST - "ZZ Deathbed"
SPIRIT LOST - "Lost Soul" (performed live on the air)
SPIRIT LOST - "Misery of a Wounded Heart"

Next Sunday night, our guests in the studio will be the Tony Mollick Project. We’ll find out the latest Tony Mollick Project happenings, plus namesake Tony will reflect on his year of recovery following his near-fatal motorcycle accident last year. We’ll also hear new songs from the group. The Tony Mollick Project returns to the “Backyard Rocker,” next Sunday night!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

SEPT. 23 - Chapter 5
SEPT. 30 - The Alluminati
OCT. 7 - Justin Mack
OCT. 14 - Acoustic Jam Special 8
OCT. 28 - White Witch (Halloween Special)
NOV. 4 - Acalasia
NOV. 11 - Our Broken Silence

In Local Music News.

The band line-up has been set for next Sunday's Rock For The Troops outdoor concert, taking place at downtown Altoona's Heritage Plaza. The free concert, which begins at 10 AM, will feature performances from the Rock Brothers, Spirit Lost, Generation Gap, Silver Sunday, the Red Letter Band, Homer's Army, the Tony Mollick Project, Splink, Slacker Theory, and Felix & the Hurricanes. The acoustic outfit Friends Of Mine will perform between bands. Food and refreshments will be available. Those attending are invited to have their own special greetings and well-wishes recorded, to be included on special DVD/CD packages to be sent to local troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Donations will also be accepted, which will be used to help with productions costs for the DVD's, and to purchase phone cards for the troops.

On Monday, December 3, an AIDS benefit concert and silent auction will take place at the State Theatre in downtown State College. Doors will open for the silent auction at 6:30 pm and the concert will begin at 8 pm. All proceeds will go to "Until There's A Cure..." (www.until.org). The show will feature performances from a variety of regional bands and solo performers, including Rhyne McCormick, Hannah Bingman, Jason Thomas, Eric Himan, The Fatman Band, Heavy Radio, Scott Mangene and more. Tickets will go on sale sometime in September. They will be $20, reserved seating. They will be available online as well as through the State Theatre box office. The link for the State Theatre is www.thestatetheatre.org.

Former "Backyard Rocker" band guests, current Atlantic Records recording group Halestorm, will appear on national television next Friday night, Sept. 7. Halestorm will perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno; the show airs at 11:30 PM on NBC.

Two long-running bands are announcing their departures from the state's music scene. The Victory In Heaven Band has decided to cease operations as a band as of the end of September. The members of the band wish to thank everybody for their support over the past seven years. The individual members of the band will be moving on to other musical projects. Sterling and Kate Koch are working on a blues band that should debut next month and Larry Baudoin and Larry Adam are in discussions about a possible band as well. There will be more updates in the future as to the individual band members' musical projects.

One of the state's longest-running heavy rock bands is calling it quits. After a 21-year career that saw them nationally signed and playing on the Vans Warped Tour, the Reading-based band Anthrophobia is retiring at the end of November. The group's official farewell performance will take place at The Silo Nightclub in Reading on November 24. Ten different bands; including Spinebelt, Stuck In Kaos, Spitcan, Cloud Party, Johnny Action Figure and more, will kick off the evening by each performing Anthrophobia songs.
