Three Rivers Productions has announced their annual Acoustic Challenge. The Acoustic Challenge is an opportunity for western PA-based singer-songwriters to showcase their original music. The Challenge runs for a total of 6 weeks in a row; 5 weeks of preliminary judging; one night for the finals. Each night of preliminary judging will includes 5 artists, either solo or duos. Artists must pre-register to secure date and venue; entrance fee is $25. Each artist gets 15 minutes to perform original music with all acoustic instruments, and a panel of volunteer judges, all involved in the music/media industry, will judge each performer using an official ballot. The winner from each preliminary round of judging will perform at the finals, to be held October 23 at the Rhythm House Cafe in Bridgeville. Third place will receive an acoustic guitar, second place receives studio time at Audible Images in Pittsburgh, and the first place winner receives a $1,000 cash grand prize. Some changes for popular Johnstown-based party band Ribbon Grass. The group recently introduced a new drummer and guitarist, both who previously played with Ribbon Grass' keyboard player and singer, Dave Single in the band The Boys. The drummer is Dave Kalina, formerly of The Boys, also Down To The Wire and Heaven Tonight; and the new guitarist is Steve Toma.

The Ebensburg-based hard rock band Panic Mode has decided to go their separate ways. The band members cited work, school schedules and other activities for the split, but left the door open for the possibility of reforming the band down the road.

Updating our recent story on the Victory In Heaven Band going their separate ways; V.I.H. singer and steel guitarist Sterling Koch and his daughter, bassist Kate Koch, are forming a new blues trio called 61 South. John Goba will play drums. 61 South will showcase music from blues artists, from Elmore James and Muddy Waters to Johnny Winters and Stevie Ray Vaughan, as well as 61 South original blues music with a few old Victory in Heaven Blues Band favorites.

After a nearly two-year hiatus, one of the area's most innovative bands is back together. The original line-up of The Grimm reunited, and performed their first show back together this past Friday night at The Lost and Found, the all-ages venue formerly known at The L:ion's Den in Juniata. Singer Bob Lee, guitarist Kirk Tonkin, bassist Kent Tonkin and drummer Ron Brode played songs from the group's library, and promised that new Grimm original compositions are on the way. Also performing on the bill were Kent's and Ron's other project, Lies, Inc., and FedUP.
