DUSTIN BURLEY @ CITY LIMITS, ALTOONA 3/29/06

(JP’s note: I’m posting this thread over 3½ years after it happened. I actually wrote the following review of the television movie I was watching this night at City Limits the morning after…Unfortunately, I never did quite get around to writing a recap of Dustin Burley’s show this night…)

Fox 8 was showing The Legend of the Red Dragon, starring Jet Li. This martial arts flick was so cheesy, it was hilarious! The movie seemed to be set in historic empirical China (at least going by the traditional outfits and hairdos). I never did quite get the gist of the plot, except that Jet Li and his young son keep engaging in battles every few seconds, ultimately facing off against a nemesis whose scarred face looked like the Chinese equivalent of Freddy Kreuger, and this guy drove around in a silver Batmobile-like car! (I didn't know the Chinese had automotive technology back in those ancient times!) Literally every few seconds, Jet Li, his kid and love interest were getting jumped by ninjas, warriors, even other little kids whose martial arts moves were as good as the adults! The movie was comical, as every fight scene turned into a choreographed martial arts dance production, with fighters leaping over each other, leaping over buildings, dodging each others' blades, throw stars and whatever else was being thrown around. There were so many fight scenes, it was chaotic! If ancient China was this violent every second, how did that civilization survive to the present day? Of course, like any Chinese martial arts movie worth its salt, this one had the cheesy dubbed-in English dialogue that didn't even try to match the lip movements of the actors! In the end, of course, Jet Li, his kid and woman win, as Chinese Freddy Kreuger meets his demise by falling into a vat of acid.

Oh, and by the way, Dustin Burley was performing at City Limits as I watched the aforementioned movie on Claudio’s wide-screen television at the main bar. My notes on this performance weren’t very complete (I didn’t know many of the songs Dustin and his guests were doing). And apparently during one of the movie’s commercial breaks, I stepped over to the stage to snap a picture:

Dustin Burley and friends, entertaining in front of the back bar at City Limits.
