Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the February 29 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

It was a busy and fun edition of the “Backyard Rocker” this week. First, we were joined in the studio by Punxsutawney-area “farm-core” rockers The Mad Cows. We got acquainted with this wild bunch, and heard songs from the group's new CD, “Life Sucks, But Who's Trying.” Several lucky listeners won copies of the CD.

In addition, we spoke with Dan Rugh, who heads up 814, the Punxsutawney-based indie label and collective whose roster includes The Mad Cows, The Marauders, The Keystone Allstars and more. Dan discussed 814 and the upcoming annual 814 St. Patrick's Day Riot, a party and showcase featuring seven 814-related bands, including The Mad Cows, The Marauders, The Lucky Strikes, The Rejx, The Electric Hips, The Pipebombs and Kung Flude. This year's Riot happens Saturday, March 13 at the Castle Pub in Ebensburg.

Dan and The Mad Cows brought along music from several bands involved with 814 and the St. Patrick's Day Riot; and we heard new songs from The Rudys, Kung Flude, This Island Earth, The Student Painters, and The Rejx.

This week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

NEVERMOURE (VS. THE EARTH) - “The American Teenage Anthem”
POPTART MONKEYS - “7:30”
THE MAD COWS - “Bloody Sleeve”
THE RUDYS - “My Backyard”
THE MAD COWS - “Beautiful Day In Our Neighborhood”
THIRD STANDARD - “Outside Wiregrass”
THE MAD COWS - “I've Been Drinking to Forget (Since I Can Remember)”
THE MARAUDERS - “Late Night Livin'”
KUNG FLUDE - “Weapon Face”

HOUR TWO:

THE BENDERZ - “Whiskey In The Jar”
GREEN EGGS - “Again”
THIS ISLAND EARTH - “The Month of December”
THE MAD COWS - “Sing for Yourself”
THE MAD COWS - “Fresh Out of Friends”
THE STUDENT PAINTERS - “Underground Railroad”
THE MAD COWS - “Grading on a Curve”
THE REJX - “Me & My Broom”
THE MAD COWS - “Walk on the Streets” (live)

It's a “Backyard Rocker” birthday this coming Sunday night! This week's show marks the sixth anniversary of the “Backyard Rocker” bringing local and regional music to the airwaves on Sunday nights. And we're celebrating with a special 3-hour “Backyard Rocker” gala! We'll feature highlights from the past year on the show. And as is usually the case for the anniversary program, we'll be joined in the studio by the show's first band guests back in 1998, Felix & the Hurricanes! We'll hear songs from the Hurricanes' latest CD, “Travelers Not Forgotten,” and you'll have chances to win a copy. Plus the Hurricanes will bring instruments and a few musical friends along, for some in-studio jamming! This week in local music news...

Some sadness on the area music scene this past week with the sudden passing of Bill Silks on Tuesday at his residence in Lewistown. He was 29. Bill played bass for several area bands in recent years, including Bad Attitude and Metallica tribute band Creeping Death. We at the “Backyard Rocker” send our sincerest condolences out to Bill's family and friends.

Speedy recovery wishes for Wake Up Screaming drummer Jim Bagrosky, who was injured in a car accident in Altoona this past Wednesday. His injuries were not life-threatening, and he is expected to make a full recovery. In the meantime, Wake Up Screaming has cancelled all their shows for the month of March while Jim recovers.

Chalk up some more off-stage successes for local musician and composer Zupe. Zupe has again scored with Fox Television, having two of his compositions accepted for use in the Fox series "The Simple Life," starring Paris Hilton. In addition, Zupe has inked a six-song publishing deal with DSM Producers, who will distribute Zupe's music worldwide through Warner Brothers.
