Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the March 14 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

WOW! What a way to kick off the seventh year of local music on the airwaves every Sunday night! Kick yourself if you missed the first-ever “Backyard Rocker” Acoustic Jam Special; it was OFF THE MAP!

Thanks to John Stevens (a.k.a. Strummer Acoustic Show) for originating the idea of the Acoustic Jam Special. After being inspired by the recent Rockpage Benefit Jam in January, John suggested the idea of inviting a number of area acoustic performers to get together on the “Backyard Rocker” some week, perform individually, and then jam together. Since an opening was available on this given night, John was given the go-ahead to put the show together. During this week's show, the central PA listenership was treated to live performances by Rock & Rye, Acid Reflux, John Solinski & Ken Karlheim, and Steve Summerhill; and the entire ensemble of musicians pooling their talents together on three songs. (John Stevens himself was battling a cold and couldn't sing, but played harmonica during the 'all-star jams.') It was a wildly fun two hours of live acoustic magic! Thanks to all the performers, and special thanks to John Stevens for putting the special together, and John Solinski for supplying the additional sound board and engineering the live performances. It was the first Acoustic Jam Special; most definitely it will not be the last!

Also on the show, we debuted new songs from the Drunken Uncles, Mercy Seat and Dave Blackledge; we celebrated St. Patrick's Day with a song from local Irish music duo the Michael O'Brian Band; and we also introduced the show's newest local/regional CD review feature, “The Professor's CD Corner.” This week, we looked at the Poptart Monkeys' latest CD, “Secret Decoder Outfit,” in detail and featured a song from the album. Needless to say, a VERY busy show!

In local music news,

Welcome home to Dick Kos and David Wessels, two area musicians and members of the Pennsylvania National Guard, who both returned home this past week after spending most of the past year serving peacekeeping duties in Kosovo.

Half Tempted has found their replacement for bassist Joe George, who left the group to relocate to Pittsburgh in December. Former Edison/Fuse/Silver Sunday member P.J. Kelly takes over bass duties.

The Hershey-based heavy rock band Balistic is still seeking a permanent drummer to replace John Lohman, who played his final shows with the band in February. In the interim, former Romeo/Aslan/Cherry Pie drummer Don Hosler is providing Balistic's drum thunder.

Popular Harrisburg party-rock band Something Fluid has announced their farewell. The group will play their final show this coming Saturday, March 20, at a venue in Lebanon. The members of Something Fluid thank all of their fans for supporting the group in their four years together.

Spitshine singer Bryan Harmony is continuing his theatric career. Bryan performs in the role of Jesus Christ in the Civic Theatre of Allentown’s production of the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar,” running Mar. 26 – Apr. 10 at the Civic Theatre in Allentown. Bryan previously appeared as Rocky Horror in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and has also appeared in regional productions of Godspell, The Who’s Tommy and The Music Man.

And the band Gemstone signed with an independent record label. The group has hooked up with Boston-based Lil’ Chaos Records, who will be re-releasing the group’s self-titled CD. Gemstone heads to Boston soon to shoot the video for the first single off the CD, “Moving Van.”
