Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the May 23 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

It was a busy edition of the “Backyard Rocker” this week! Thanks to our guests, Aixelsyd (pronounced “Axel-sidd”) for making the roadtrip in from Pittsburgh to appear on this week’s program. Aixelsyd introduced us to their brand of “sloppy pop” punk rock, as we featured songs from the group’s humorous compilation CD, “Cuts from the Crap,” and two lucky listeners won CD’s, patches and a Conviction Records T-shirt. The group also performed two acoustic numbers live on the air. In addition, we checked on local music news, and the “Professor’s CD Corner” reviewed Third Standard’s debut CD, “Rabbit Run.” We also debuted new music from Ted McCloskey, Vs. the Earth and Spitshine. And on top of all of that, this was a “Harley Qualification Weekend,” so we qualified two lucky “Backyard Rocker” listeners to have a chance to win Q94’s Anniversary Edition Harley-Davidson Night Train motorcycle, being given away June 19th at Altoona’s Lakemont Park. Whew, what a show!

The playlist:

HOUR ONE:

INSIDE OUT – “Next To You”
GREEN EGGS – “My Band”
AIXELSYD – “Stand Up”
TED McCLOSKEY – “That Much Closer To…”
AIXELSYD – “Calvin and Hobbes”
FLORD – “4 Walls”
AIXELSYD – “Radio Play” (performed live on air)
AIXELSYD – “Without Looking”
SCREAMAPILLAR – “The Tequila Song”
VS. THE EARTH – “Friend Zone”

HOUR TWO:

EMILY’S TOYBOX – “Dear”
SPITSHINE – “Even More”
AIXELSYD – “Love, Hopes, Dreams & Smiles”
THIRD STANDARD – “Denied”
AIXELSYD – “Hopeless & Heartless”
INFUSED – “Defused”
AIXELSYD – “Wait” (performed live on air)
AIXELSYD – “Punk Rock Breakup Song”
NEXT STOP DETOX – “3 Years Ago”

This Sunday night, it’s one of the most popular “Backyard Rocker” programs we do every year, the annual Memorial Day Special. During this 3-hour special, we’ll dig into the local/regional music archives to play music from past area bands and artists. And during the 3rd hour, we’ll commemorate area musicians no longer with us. Join us at a special start time for the annual “Backyard Rocker” Memorial Day Special, beginning at 7 PM this Sunday night!

Other forthcoming guests and specials include:

In local music news this week:

After parting ways with singer Chuck Budzina, the remaining three members of Stept On – guitarist Matt Day, bassist Art Armani and drummer Josh Hetrick – have picked up a new singer, former Graphic lead singer Greg Locke. The group has chosen a new name, A Divine Tragedy, and will make their official debut in Altoona June 12.

Former “Backyard Rocker” guests from last October, Lehigh Valley political rockers Poker Face, are heading south to Atlanta, Georgia to perform at the Libertarian Party’s National Convention next Friday. They will be opening for Jimmy Vaughan.

Altoona-based heavy rockers Flord have had another change behind the drum kit – back to their original drummer. Rick Fisher has officially rejoined the group. Flord will now concentrate on developing more songs, with the goal of having their second full-length CD completed by the end of summer.

And Johnstown rockers Inside Out are back in the market for a new guitarist, after Dan Kusher announced he is leaving the group for career reasons.
