Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the June 6 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

It turned into another special edition of the “Backyard Rocker,” when we were joined in the studio by Chuck Navasky and Felix & the Hurricanes, discussing One Less Tear (www.onelesstear.com). Chuck, an area musician who sang with such bands over the years as Rude Dawg, One Eyed Jack and more, developed throat cancer in 1999. After battling and beating throat cancer twice (having two successive tumors and part of his throat removed), Chuck founded One Less Tear, a musical project to raise money for cancer research. Through his family business of designing clothing for celebrities in entertainment and sports, Chuck had developed close friendships with many of these celebrities, and he enlisted the aid of many of them in the recording of the 2001 One Less Tear album – including Donnie and Johnny Van Zant (who recorded the song “Alive” specifically for Chuck, who received the song the morning he was to undergo his first throat operation), Mark Slaughter (Slaughter), Dale Russell (The Guess Who), Kevin Sharp (a cancer survivor himself), Olivia Newton John and more. We learned about the One Less Tear 2004 Survivor Tour, which kicks off June 26 at Thunder In The Valley in Johnstown, with One Less Tear opening for Blue Oyster Cult and Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers. Through the course of the discussion, we realized once again that cancer is the great equalizer, which can affect anybody, whether famous or not; but we also realized that the battle to eradicate cancer is a unifying force that can bring local musicians and celebrities from the entertainment world together for a common cause. We heard songs from the One Less Tear album, along with two new songs; we also spoke with Mark Slaughter via phone; and Felix & the Hurricanes performed a new song live in the studio. In addition, we debuted a new song from The Jellybricks, and the Professor’s CD Corner reviewed the new Balistic EP, “Transference,” to close the show. A very special, and very busy, edition of the “Backyard Rocker” indeed!

In local music news this week:

After a successful six year run as one of this area’s top onstage 80’s rock parties, the Ebensburg-based band RetroActive gave their swan song performance this past Friday night in front of a jam-packed Castle Pub in Ebensburg. It was wall to wall bodies, as the band’s fans, dubbed the “Children of the 80’s,” cheered as the group celebrated musical memories of the 80’s for one last time. The farewell show included several guests, as RetroActive was joined onstage by founding members Kirk and Kent Tonkin (who left the group to form The Grimm), and by Hair Force One singer Victor Synn and guitarist Jimi Hatt. During the finale, guitarist John Solinski gave away his pair of KISS slippers to a lucky audience member, and smashed his guitar Pete Townshend-style at the end of the performance. Thanks to RetroActive for an excellent run on area stages, and to those fans who missed the finale, there’s always the eventual reunion tour.

It’s déjà vu for Driven. After going through a musical chairs journey of band members leaving and joining the band over the past few months, the band has returned to square one, and has reassembled their original lineup plus one. Guitarist Scott Bush and drummer Jim Povitch have rejoined singer James Musselman and bassist Josh Michael. Former D-Cell guitarist Mike Snyder makes Driven a fivesome. The group will continue to work towards their second full-length CD, expected out later this year.

A big benefit show is happening later this month in Huntingdon County to help out the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. The first annual Relay for Life Band Jam will happen on Saturday, June 19 at the Shade Gap Picnic Grounds. Some of the bands taking part include Scream, Spitshine, Sound Of Silence, Flord, Dishonest John, Spring Drive and more.

For the third year in a row, the Blair County Community Action Agency is presenting their Summer Concert Series Wednesday evenings at downtown Altoona's Heritage Plaza; The first concert, taking place on June 16, will feature the bands Square One and the Prime Time Band. The concerts are free and start at 7pm.
