Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the January 28 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

This week, we welcomed back our most frequent-flyer guest in the show's history, Sterling Koch - making his twelfth guest appearance since the show started in 1998. Via phone, Sterling gave us the lowdown on his new album, GuitaR & B, as well as his new musical endeavor into the world of modern R&B and jazz! We featured tunes from the CD, and debuted new songs from Nag Champions Mystery Band and Whiskey Pie. We also updated "Local Music News," dug a 2003 song from Katsu from the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," and reviewed Silver Screen's Inertia EP in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

THE COMMONHEART - "Who Dat Mama"
CHRIS VIPOND & THE STANLEY STREET BAND - "Everybody Else"
STERLING KOCH - "Easy Road"
NAG CHAMPIONS MYSTERY BAND - "Weary Mind's Eye"
STERLING KOCH - "Holiday"
DAN STONEROOK - "Small Town Ten"
STERLING KOCH - "Unconditional"
RED PAINT - "Where Giants Play"
WHISKEY PIE - "The Ode to Jesse Custer"

HOUR TWO:

DEREK WOODS BAND - "Much Better Now"
DOUG IRWIN - "Rattle the Cage"
STERLING KOCH - "Another Day"
SILVER SCREEN - "Labelled Off"
STERLING KOCH - "Enough"
KATSU - "Prison Break" (2003, Local Music Flashback)
STERLING KOCH - "Stories of Yesterday"
THE CREW OF THE HALF MOON - "Stark Lost Lovers"

Since our next program coincides with a major sporting event pitting teams from Philadelphia and New England against each other, we will keep with show tradition and present the 2018 installment of the "Ladies of Local Music Special!" We will again spotlight the women who write songs, sing and play instruments on the local and regional music scene! We'll celebrate women who perform rock, folk, blues, country, metal, punk, bluegrass and more! We'll also dig into the archive to pull out a song from a past area female performer for a "Local Music Flashback!"

Upcoming guests and specials include:

FEB. 25 - X's For Eyes
MAR. 4 - Millennium Music Conference Recap
MAR. 11 - Homegrown Rocker 20th Anniversary Special!
MAR. 18 - St. Patrick's Day Special
MAR. 25 - Millennium Contest Winner (TBA)

(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

In Local Music News...

A special show is being set up for later this year in memory of area musician Eric Sager, who passed away last year. The show will take place on Saturday, June 9 at Altoona's Four Dees Lounge, and will feature reunion performances by Eric's former band, Ten Sent Wings, along with the Full Time Kings, The Deuces, and two more bands to be announced. All proceeds from the show will benefit Eric's surviving son. More information about this show will be announced later in the year.

Several area bands are set to issue new recordings. Hate Grenade is about to release their second full-length CD. The new album, called The King Is Dead, will be officially released on March 10. The group has released a first single from the new album, a tune called "Burn," which we will debut soon on the "Homegrown Rocker."

Small Town Horror Show is approaching completion on their second album. The sophomore effort will be called Way Past Indifferent, and will be released later this year.

A new band will soon make its debut on area stages. The group Maul formed last year and has been developing original song material. The group features Black Sun and Small Town Horror Show singer Todd McKeone, former Lies, Inc. guitarist Nate Nagle, guitarist Eric Prindible, bassist Tanner Thomas and drummer Dave Applas. The group's sound will be rooted in 1990s and modern-styled riff rock.

And Johnstown's annual motorcycle rally, Thunder In The Valley, has announced its band headliners for this year. Quiet Riot, Great White and AC/DC tribute group Hells/Bells will perform at this year's event, which happens on June 21-24.
