Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the July 8 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

This week, we presented the annual "Cover Song Special." We explored how area bands and musicians interpret and integrate the music of others into their own distinctive voices and styles. We checked out local reworkings spanning popular hits to obscure songs and artists over a wide range of genres. Along the way, we updated "Local Music News" and pulled a 2000 cover classic by Backstreet Law from the archive for a "Local Music Flashback!"

Here is this week's playlist (with original songwriter/hitmaker in parentheses):

Along the way, we will update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, and review Shattered's Blackout Sessions CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

In Local Music News...

Three former popular State College band favorites are getting back together for a special reunion weekend later this month at The Saloon. Bluesuedegroove, Dunston Ashe and The Fables - all who were popular on State College stages in the late 1990s and early 2000s - will reunite onstage at The Saloon from Friday through Sunday, July 20 through 22.

A retreat event for songwriters will take place in Huntingdon County later this month. Organized by Ron Russell and Tammy Carolus, the Songwriters Riverfront Retreat will happen on the weekend of July 27 through 29 at Lazy Dazy Riverfront Campground near Alexandria. The event will feature Nashville-based award-winning songwriters Wynn Varble, Curtis Wright and Jim Femino, as well as performances by Waylon Jennings' grandson, Whey Jennings and his band The Unwanted, along with Bad Ass Billie Gant. The event will include instructional workshops, writers' rounds, camping and meals. For more information, email bluoshum1@yahoo.com, or call (814) 669-9253.

And sad news to report regarding a former area musician...David Van Doran, former bassist and singer for the Bellwood-based rock group Still Holdin,' lost his life on June 29 after his motorcycle was struck by an oncoming car in Butler County. David was 50. David had performed with Still Holdin' in the late 1990s before relocating from the area. We at the "Homegrown Rocker" offer our condolences to David's surviving family, friends and former bandmates.
