Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the May 5 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

This week, we had a guest on the program, speaking via phone with Pittsburgh-based singer, songwriter and musician John Vento (www.johnvento.com). We learned about John's story and career, discussed his music, and heard songs from his latest album, Love, Lust and Other Wreckage! Along the way, we debuted new tunes from Alyssa Hankey w/Jason Gamble and Silver Lights, updated "Local Music News," dug a 2007 number by Like A Movie (featuring recent contestant on NBC Television's "The Voice," Altoona native Jimmy Mowery) from the archive for our "Local Music Flashback," and reviewed Brady Novotny's Passions Collide CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

THE CLARKS - "Map of the Stars"
BACKLASH - "Days Gone Past"
JOHN VENTO - "Rainbows and Lightning"
ALYSSA HANKEY w/JASON GAMBLE - "Love Song"
JOHN VENTO - "Baby Blues"
BLACK CAT MOAN - "Burns Like Hell"
JOHN VENTO - "Only Love Stays Alive"
SILVER LIGHTS - "Sunny"

HOUR TWO:

ANATOMY OF THE SACRED - "Narcissi"
ZACH WADE & THE GOOD GRIEF - "Halfway Man"
JOHN VENTO - "Follow Your Heart"
BRADY NOVOTNY - "Heart's Fire"
JOHN VENTO - "Good Life Made"
LIKE A MOVIE - "The Views of the Revolutionary Towards Himself" (2007, Local Music Flashback)
JOHN VENTO - "Just Don't Care"
BLACK RIDGE - "Walk Out the Door"

On our next program, we will finally be able to have guest Chelsea Takami on the show! As you may recall, Chelsea won a guest appearance on the program after submitting her download card to our dropbox during February's Millennium Music Conference, and her card was selected at the end of the conference. Throat issues prevented Chelsea from appearing on the show last month, but with her voice back at full strength, we will meet and learn about Chelsea, discussing her music and career, and hearing tunes off her recently-issued debut EP, Heart Wide Open! Along the way, we will update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, and review David Uosikkinen's In The Pocket's Life at the Keswick CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" Listen to the "Homegrown Rocker," Sunday night (May 12) at 8 p.m. on 105.9 Qwik-Rock on your FM radio dial, or stream it live online at www.1059qwikrock.com!

In Local Music News...

Altoona native Jimmy Mowery’s quest on NBC Television’s “The Voice” came to an end last week, after he did not receive enough audience votes following Monday night’s program to advance to the final eight contestants in the contest. Altoona Mayor Matt Pacifico declared the month of May as Jimmy Mowery Month in Altoona. And Jimmy will be returning to the area later this month to perform for his family, friends, fans and followers. Jimmy will perform at the Altoona Primanti Bros. location on Friday evening, May 17.

State College Area High School 2012 graduate and four-time Grammy award-winning jazz saxophonist Ian Hendrickson-Smith " a current member of The Roots who has worked and recorded with Lady Gaga, Sting, Stevie Wonder, Bruno Mars, U2 and others " will be playing a special homecoming concert at the State Theatre in State College this coming Friday evening, May 10 starting at 8 p.m. Ian and his bandmates will present a master class for children preceding the concert beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Popular regional and international show band Rick K & the Allnighters are dealing with the passing of their bass player, as Paul Alan Doege passed away unexpectedly on April 23 from health complications. Paul had been a member of the group for more than ten years. The group has been working with different bass players until a permanent replacement can be found.
