Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the July 28 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

This week, we cleaned out the mailboxes and checked out music from new recordings that have arrived in recent days! As a result, we debuted brand new tunes from Gene The Werewolf, The Dark Country, Zac Grace, Justin Wade, Shannon Marsyada, Well Strung, Gelatinous Cube, Prime 8 and Post Traumatik! Along the way, we updated "Local Music News," dug a 2001 number from Harrisburg's Elysion Fields from the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," and stepped "Across State Lines" twice - checking out a tune from Altoona native Davina (Sowers) Lozier and her renowned Minnesota-based Davina & the Vagabonds during our first hour, and hearing music from former State College musician Tony Begnal and his current band, Brooklyn-based Chesty Malone & the Slice 'Em Ups during our second hour!

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

DONNY BURNS & THE 3RD DEGREE - "Think You Know"
MEDUSA'S DISCO - "Painters Painting Paintings"

Band guests return on our next program, as we introduce you to brand new Altoona-based rock group August Wake! We'll meet members of the group and learn their story, plus hear songs from their recently-issued debut EP, Mistakes I've Made! Along the way, we'll debut a few new tunes, update "Local Music News," and dig into the archive for a "Local Music Flashback" or two! Listen to the "Homegrown Rocker," Sunday night (August 4) at 8 p.m. on 105.9 Qwik-Rock on your FM radio dial, or stream it live online at www.1059qwikrock.com!

In Local Music News...

Sad news tops our look at “Local Music News,” as two popular names from the Susquehanna region passed away in recent days.

Steve Mitchell, a renowned drummer from the Susquehanna Valley whose career included nearly three decades as one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s busiest studio drummers, passed away in his sleep on Thursday morning (July 25) at age 73. Born in Bradford County, Steve arrived in San Francisco during the “Summer of Love” in 1967, and went on to play and record with such names as Van Morrison, The Coasters, Lou Rawls and the Smothers Brothers. His drumming can also be heard on music from the Charlie Brown television specials, John Chancellor’s news program, the Garfield the Cat cartoon and numerous commercials. He returned to Pennsylvania in 1995 and played in various Susquehanna Valley bands and projects, before declining health forced him to step away from active drumming.

And Harrisburg area musician Joe Glasser passed away unexpectedly on July 19 at age 53. Joe was a prominent bass player on the Harrisburg area music scene, and had been involved in a number of band projects during the past three decades, including Lovestomp, Stomp’d, Insane, Siogo, Rock View, Sugar Muscle, Sister Stryc-9, Cheez, Duck Down Boulevard and others.

And a reminder that next Sunday, August 4, is the day for the fourth annual Vets Fest at Altoona’s Unter Uns Musical and Entertainment Society. Presented by the Vietnam Veterans of America Blair County Chapter 967, proceeds from the event will help out veterans in need in Blair County. The show will start at 1 p.m., and feature performances from the bands Flashpoint, Kickin,’ Skye 2.0, M.F.G. and This Albatross. Donation at the door will be $5 per person. Food, refreshments and prizes will be available.
