Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the August 4 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

This week, we featured band guests, as we met up with Matt Wagner and Big Dawg - half of new Altoona-based rock group August Wake - for a conversation recorded inside Penn State Altoona's Slep Student Center! We discussed the band's beginnings and music, and featured songs from August Wake's recently-issued four-song debut EP, Mistakes I've Made! Along the way, we debuted new songs by Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors, The Clarks, Van Wagner and Nate Gates, updated "Local Music News," and featured two "Local Music Flashbacks" from August Wake members' past projects - including a 2001 tune from Big Dawg's former band, Nevermoure, during the first hour, and a 2003 track from guitarist Joe Scott and drummer Manny Barbazzeni's former group, Third Standard, during the second hour!

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

JIM DONOVAN & THE SUN KING WARRIORS - "The Last Dance"
MISS MELANIE & THE VALLEY RATS - "Let's Ride" (live)
AUGUST WAKE - "Mistakes I've Made"
THE CLARKS - "Part of My Life"
ZACH WADE & THE GOOD GRIEF - "Halfway Man"
NEVERMOURE - "Troubled Waters" (2001, Local Music Flashback)
AUGUST WAKE - "Crazy In Love"
ALYSSA HANKEY & JASON GAMBLE - "Love Song"
VAN WAGNER - "Shotgun Way"
THE RANDOM HUBIAK - "Halcyon Daze"

HOUR TWO:

JOHN VENTO - "Follow Your Heart"
MARSHMELLOW OVERCOAT - "Smoke Screen"
AUGUST WAKE - "Come Alive"
NATE GATES - "Ghosts on the River"
SILVER SCREEN - "Codeine"
THIRD STANDARD - "Denied" (2003, Local Music Flashback)
AUGUST WAKE - "Throne"
DIRTY MOJO - "Too Much Alcohol"

On our next show, it's again back to the mailboxes to check out music from more new recordings that have arrived in recent days, so debuting new music will be the main theme! We'll also update "Local Music News," dig another "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, step "Across State Lines" to spotlight a song from an independent out-of-state band or artist, and review Wrath Of Typhon's Kingdom of Fear CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" Listen to the "Homegrown Rocker," Sunday night (August 11) at 8 p.m. on 105.9 Qwik-Rock on your FM radio dial, or stream it live online at www.1059qwikrock.com!

In Local Music News...

The lineup is set for the 13th annual “Day Of Rock” benefit concert, which happens on Saturday, August 17 at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum. Proceeds from the day-long event will benefit the We Care Foundation of Central PA. The gates open at noon, with performances from Shallow 9, Matt Pletcher, Downshift, Railtowne, Fyre, Ben Dumm Band, Jae Smith, Bone Jacked, It Is Written and more. To purchase tickets, visit the website www.centralpatickets.com.

The local and regional music scene lost two more members and friends in recent days… Gary Strickland, longtime Williamsport area guitarist and member of the Dirty Mojo Blues Band, died on July 26 after an extended illness. He was 56. A celebration of Gary’s life will take place next Sunday, August 11 starting at noon at the Trout Run Hotel in Trout Run.

And Harry Pellegrine Sr., co-founder of longtime restaurant and music venue Pellegrine’s in Altoona, passed away on July 25 at age 83 following an extended illness. Harry and his brother, Steve, founded Pellegrine’s in early 1964, and it became a popular sports bar, eatery, and eventually a top live music venue which established a long tradition of live bands on Sunday nights.

And it is official…Popular Altoona-based heavy metal rockers Naildriver have announced they are exiting the music scene for good following a 12-year run. In a message posted on social media, the group thanked all the musicians who were part of the group over the years, the venues that hosted them, the fans, and the other bands they shared the stage with. Band members will be moving on to other projects.
