Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the August 18 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

We stayed in the mailboxes during this week's program to explore more new local and regional recordings that have arrived in recent days! We debuted new songs from Jeff Webb and the Delectable Sound, Medusa's Disco, Jessica Illuzzi, White Witch and Dive! We also updated "Local Music News," dug a 1997 number by Pittsburgh's Groove Junkies from the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," stepped "Across State Lines" to hear a brand new song from Baltimore's Silvertung, and reviewed Iron Wolf's Strong Never Broken CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

CHRIS RATTIE - "Burn 'Em Down"
THE COMMONHEART - "Who Dat Mama"
JEFF WEBB AND THE DELECTABLE SOUND - "Can't Take the Heat"
THE ROOF - "Fall In Line"
MEDUSA'S DISCO - "Book Upon My Shelf"
SILVER SCREEN - "Labelled Off"
JESSICA ILLUZZI - "Money Tree"
CHRIS BELL - "The Dad Song"
THE RANDOM HUBIAK - "Affected Disaffection"
AUGUST WAKE - "Come Alive"
JEFF PERIGO & FRIENDS - "Let Billy In"

HOUR TWO:

NEGAN - "Obsolete"
STEEL - "Tornado Alley"
WHITE WITCH - "Changes Coming"
IRON WOLF - "Hellfire"
DIVE - "Bliss"
THE GROOVE JUNKIES - "Life on the Hardline" (1997, Local Music Flashback)
SILVERTUNG - "World Gone Mad" (Across State Lines)
DEFIANT - "4 Years for Nothing"
DARKNESS ON THE RADIO - "New Murders, Old Crows"

Band guests return to our next program, as we meet up with members of the Derek Woods Band! We'll get caught up on the latest Derek Woods Band happenings, and check out songs from their just-issued EP, The Question! Along the way, we will update "Local Music News," dig another "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, and review Nate Gates' Ghost on the River CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" Listen to the "Homegrown Rocker," Sunday night (August 25) at 8 p.m. on 105.9 Qwik-Rock on your FM radio dial, or stream it live online at www.1059qwikrock.com!

In Local Music News...

Penn State Altoona has announced a new show date for national recording group We the Kings. The group will perform on Friday evening, August 30, in the parking lot of the campus’ Misciagna Family Center for the Performing Arts. Recent NBC Television “The Voice” contestant Jimmy Mowery will open the show, which begins at 7 p.m. Admission to the concert is free, and the show is open to the public. We The Kings were originally slated to headline last spring’s Ivyside Off the Rails Music and Arts Festival, but the event was cancelled due to a threat of severe weather.

Long dormant area rockers Roadkill will be reconvening for a special benefit event next month. Roadkill will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their formation on Friday evening, September 13, at the Slovak Club in Osceola Mills. The show will start at 9 p.m. with special guests Mess opening, and a jam session following Roadkill’s performance. Donation is $5 per person, with proceeds benefiting the Lisa’s Ladybugs Patient Care Fund.

Pittsburgh rock’n’soul group The Commonheart released their second full-length CD this weekend. The album, called “Pressure,” was officially released on Friday (August 16).

Sad news again struck the regional music community with the passings of two members. Alex Richardson, former bass player of Johnstown-based hard rock band Silver Screen, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 9. Also known by his nickname “Tuba,” Alex was 24 years old. And Scott Sprankle, longtime sound engineer for Harrisburg-based hard rockers Steel, passed away on Tuesday (August 13) following a battle with cancer. He was 52 years old. We at the “Homegrown Rocker” extend our sympathies to the families, friends and bandmates of both men.
