Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the January 5 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

We began New Year 2020 by visiting the mailboxes to catch up on new local and regional recordings that arrived during the holiday season! We introduced lots of new music, debuting songs from Above The Radar, Rik Golden, Gary Carl, Kerry Richard Pak & Outlaw Country, The Roof, Savage Bliss, Railroad City Murder Machines and It Is Written. We also updated "Local Music News," dug a 2005 number by Flord from the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," stepped "Across State Lines" to hear music from Austin, Texas-based performer Hanna Barakat (with Altoona native Lisa Fazenbaker on drums), and we reviewed Bushmaster feat. Gary Brown's Dancing in the Belly of the Beast CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

THE WHATLEYS - "Bionic Eyes"
PRIVATE I - "Totality"
ABOVE THE RADAR - "Ride"
RIK GOLDEN - "Alone"
GARY CARL - "The Pencil and the Paper"
ZAC GRACE - "This Is the Day"
KERRY RICHARD PAK & OUTLAW COUNTRY - "Wild Mountain Flower"
JUSTIN WADE BAND - "Story to Tell"
JIMMY MOWERY - "Turn Out the Lights"
SHANNON MARSYADA - "Caught Falling"
DIVE - "Runaway"
CONNER GILBERT - "Run Away"

HOUR TWO:

FELIX & THE HURRICANES - "Little Ears"
BLACK CAT MOAN - "Lay It Down"
THE ROOF - "Isabel"
BUSHMASTER feat. GARY BROWN - "Elevator"
SAVAGE BLISS - "Torture Chamber"
FLORD - "Next Level" (2005, Local Music Flashback)
HANNA BARAKAT - "Wanting to Go Home" (Across State Lines)
ANATOMY OF THE SACRED - "Suicide Lake"
RAILROAD CITY MURDER MACHINES - "Backsleeve"
13 SAINTS - "When Pigs Fly"
IT IS WRITTEN - "The Hunt"
HATE GRENADE - "Burn"

With schools and area colleges resuming classes after the holiday break, we will attempt a new special on our next program, recognizing members of the area music community who also work in classroom environments in our inaugural "Local Musicians in Academia Special!" We'll salute those folks who teach in classrooms by day and make music by night! From area folk performers to blues artists, to rock, punk and even one of the heaviest metal bands in the state, we'll hear from local and regional educators who represent on live music stages! Along the way, we'll update "Local Music News," and review educator Van Wagner's "Shortleaf Pine" CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" Listen to the "Homegrown Rocker," Sunday night (January 12) at 8 p.m. on 105.9 Qwik-Rock on your FM radio dial, or stream it live online at www.1059qwikrock.com!

In Local Music News...

Multiple bands and performers will donate their talents for “Songs for a Friend: A Celebration to Benefit Our Brother, Mark Ross,” taking place at the State Theatre in downtown State College on Jan. 18 to help out area music scene mainstay Mark Ross; the guitarist for Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats, Queen Bee & the Blue Hornet Band and other projects, Mark was recently diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer and is currently undergoing treatments. Performers at the special show will include The Blue Hornet Band, Felix & the Hurricanes, Tyne & the Fastlyne, Triple A Blues Band, Ted McCloskey & the Hi-Fi’s, Miss Melanie, Strayer, Dawn Kinnard, Hannah Bingman, Raven & the Wren, Jason McIntyre and more.

Former One Adam 12 frontman and guitarist Lloyd Rummell has found a new band home, as he has joined Homer City-based rock group Post Traumatik. Lloyd’s former band, One Adam 12, went their separate ways last summer after a 10-year run on area stages.

Johnstown’s Saturn Plan has added a new singer and changed their name. Annalise Martin is joining to take over lead singing duties in the group, joining guitarist John Charney, bassist Brad Barron and drummer Dominic Peruso, Jr. With the addition, the group is changing their name to Band Of Eden.

And drummer Jordan Thompson announced that his New Year’s Eve show with My Hero Zero was his final performance in the group. Jordan explained that he is stepping away from full-time live performing for the time being to recharge, and left the door open to returning to a band situation down the road.
