Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the July 12 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock (94.3 FM) in Altoona and Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via both stations' websites.

Shortly after the "Homegrown Rocker" made its debut as the "Backyard Rocker" program in early March, 1998, we welcomed our first-ever band guests in the studio - Felix & the Hurricanes! The Hurricanes were annual frequent-flyer guests during the program's first ten years, usually visiting when the show marked its anniversary each March. But the Hurricanes' busy performance schedule plus the program moving along to new radio homes prevented the annual Hurricanes visit from happening after 2008. But the longtime Hurricanes roster of Felix Kos, Jeff Clapper and Bob Watters returned to our program this week, and it was a grand time! We caught up on Hurricanes happenings, including how they coped with the COVID-19 shutdown, their 2010 visit to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge, their thoughts as they passed the 30-year milestone as a band, and more. We heard tracks from the group's new double-CD live set All Roads Lead to Cresson, and the Hurricanes even set up instruments and played a few songs for us! We also debuted new songs from Lenina Crowne and Barbara Blue, updated "Local Music News," dug a 1997 number by R.C. Yetter & Riviera Paradise from the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," and reviewed Norman Nardini's Notorious CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

JOHN EDWIN PHELPS - "Fight'n Man"
NATE GATES - "From the Hollar to the Hood"
FELIX & THE HURRICANES - "Grow"
LENINA CROWNE - "(More) Feelings"
FELIX & THE HURRICANES - "Whirlwind" (live)
BARBARA BLUE - "Accidental Theft"
FELIX & THE HURRICANES - "Blue On Black" (live)

HOUR TWO:

BLACK CAT MOAN - "No One Gonna Love You"
THE JUKEHOUSE BOMBERS - "Rooster Gets to Crowin'"
FELIX & THE HURRICANES - "Beale Street" (performed live on the air)
NORMAN NARDINI - "Ole Number 21"
FELIX & THE HURRICANES - "My Strength and My Courage" (performed live on the air)
FELIX & THE HURRICANES - "La La Land" (performed live on the air)
FELIX & THE HURRICANES - "It's Too Late" (performed live on the air)
R.C. YETTER & RIVIERA PARADISE - "Pearly" (1997, Local Music Flashback)

Every week on the "Homegrown Rocker," we focus our attention on the original musical creations of local and regional bands and musicians. But once a year, we devote a program toward how area bands and artists interpret music that others have created. Thus our next show will be the 2020 installment of the "Cover Song Special!" We'll hear local and regional bands and performers present their distinctive takes on songs from famous bands and artists, and in a multitude of flavors! Hear from area performers like Felix & the Hurricanes, Pure Cane Sugar, Bree Gearhart, Chip & the Charge Ups, Black Cat Moan, Railroad City Murder Machines, Mama Corn, Derek Woods Band, Full Kilt and many more! Hear the "Homegrown Rocker" this Sunday night (July 19) on Q94 Classic Rock (94.3 on your FM dial, or online at www.q94classicrock.com) and 105.9 Qwik Rock (105.9 on your FM dial, or online at www.1059qwikrock.com)!

Upcoming guests and specials:

AUGUST 2 - DONNY BURNS & THE 3RD DEGREE
OCTOBER 18 - TONY MOLLICK
OCTOBER 25 - HALLOWEEN SPECIAL

(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

In Local Music News...

Mr. Small’s Theatre in Pittsburgh’s Millvale has postponed their annual Yinzfest event until December. The original date was August 15, but the event has now been moved until December 12. All tickets purchased for the original date will be honored at the December event.

In the wake of the annual St. Bernard’s Homecoming Picnic in Hastings being cancelled for this August due to COVID-19, a live music event has been organized in Hastings for that same weekend. Hastings Woodstock 2020 will take place on Saturday evening, August 15 at Hastings Park. The event starts at 6 p.m., and will be for ages 21 and over. The band Acoustic Stew will perform at 9 p.m., with openers the Nag Champions and Mellissa Vella. Food and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Admission will be $5 per person.

Pittsburgh-based rock group Black Ridge entered the studio this past week to start work on their next recording. The group conducted a successful fund-raising effort online to help fund the recording of the new release.

During this difficult time, we at the “Homegrown Rocker” encourage our listeners and area music fans to help out musicians as their livelihoods are on hold and they cannot earn their regular income. Consider visiting their websites to purchase CD’s, music downloads or other merchandise, or make a donation to their virtual “tip jars” when you see artists performing live streaming concerts.
