Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the June 6 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock!

This week we stepped "Across State Lines" to spotlight a guest from outside the state of PA - but with a local twist! Thanks to Austin, Texas-based singer, songwriter, musician and bandleader Hanna Barakat (www.hannabarakat.com) and her group - including Altoona's own Lisa Fazenbaker on drums - for joining us via phone this week! We learned about Hanna and her career, explored her music as we played songs from her debut album Siren, and previewed Hanna's upcoming local show at McGarvey's in Altoona on June 10! We also introduced a new song from Johnstown's Inside Out, updated "Local Music News," pulled a 2009 song from Altoona's Acalasia from the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," and reviewed Bad Luck Lover Boys' Letters from Emily album in "The Professor's CD Corner!" (For those who missed the program, a four-part podcast of this show is available for listening or download from Q94's website, www.q94classicrock.com. Click on "The Professor's Classroom," and then scroll down to "Homegrown Rocker Podcast" and look for the four show segments marked with the date, 060621.)

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

THE JEREMY EDGE PROJECT - "Firedancer"
JIM DONOVAN & THE SUN KING WARRIORS - "You Are My Everything"
HANNA BARAKAT - "Siren"
SOURMASH - "Mr. Mayhem"

ACALASIA - "Paint These Smiles On" (2009, Local Music Flashback)

We'll have guests via phone on our next program as well, as Pittsburgh's Sourmash - "The Baddest Biker Band on the Planet" - joins us! We'll meet the band members and learn their story, hear their music, and preview their live show as they entertain at the PA Roundhouse Rally at Roundhouse Harley Davidson on June 24, and perform at Johnstown's Thunder in the Valley the following day! We'll also update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, and review Patrick Motto's Reflection: Part 1 album in "The Professor's CD Corner!" In Local Music News...

Popular Somerset County rock band Diamond Star Halo has reached its end. Drummer Todd Reffner made the announcement this past week, citing his own health issues and another band member retiring as factors in the decision. Todd announced that he is also stepping away from active live drumming due to his health concerns, but may make guest appearances with other performers as his health situation permits.

After appearing as a guest with the group over the past few months, singer and keyboardist Caryn Dixon has officially joined the ranks of popular State College rock and pop group My Hero Zero. Caryn’s first shows as a full member of My Hero Zero happened last weekend (May 28-29) in Dewey Beach, Delaware and Ocean City, Maryland.

And the area music scene was saddened with the passings of two members in recent days...William Ford passed away unexpectedly on May 25. Formerly of Hollidaysburg, William was a bandsman in the United States Air Force in the early 1960s, and retired from the 28th Division Band of the Army National Guard in 1995. He was a private drum teacher at Ford Music in Altoona and a freelance musician for nearly four decades.

And Rick Claar, a longtime sound engineer on the area music scene, passed away on Thursday (June 3) after battling health issues. He was 66. Rick ran sound for many of musician John McKelvey's band projects, including Piranha, The Front, The Housepets, Paradise Lost, Issues, Flight 19 and others, plus ran sound for numerous other area bands, performers, shows and benefits. He also ran sound for many of the Blair County Community Action Agency's summer concerts at downtown Altoona's Heritage Plaza in recent years, plus he engineered and archived recordings for a number of bands and musicians.
