Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the April 9 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock (www.q94classicrock.com), and from 10 PM to midnight on 107.1 and 101.3 Jack FM (www.1071jack.fm)!

We welcomed more guests into the studio this week, as Ty Ayers, Steve Holtz and Joe Scott of Altoona area alternative rockers Paper Plants (www.paperplantsband.com) shared the group's story, explained their music and creative processes, and live show. We heard tracks from both Paper Plants EP's, Disclosure and Don't Try to Save Me. We also debuted new songs from Silver Screen, The Kilmaine Saints and Sunset Over Mars; updated "Local Music News" and pulled a 2003 number from Joe and Steve's former project, Third Standard, for this week's "Local Music Flashback!" (For those who missed the program, a four-part podcast of this show is available for listening or download from Q94's website, www.q94classicrock.com. Click on "The Professor's Classroom," and then scroll down to "Homegrown Rocker Podcast" and look for the four show segments marked with the date, 040923.)

In 1990, local children's entertainer, magician and musician Dennie Huber introduced "Crazy Fest," an amateur talent show in the Altoona area that provided opportunities for youngsters to step on stage - many for the first time ever - to display their talents in front of a friendly and supportive audience for awards, trophies and other prizes. "Crazy Fest" had a healthy 25-year run, but was discontinued after Dennie's passing in 2016. This year, several of the past contestants and supporters decided to bring back "Crazy Fest" in honor and memory of Dennie, and the event will take place at the Juniata Civic Association in Altoona on Sunday, April 23. Two of the driving forces behind "Crazy Fest's" return, Elaini Arthur and Typhani Russo, will join us in the studio to discuss "Crazy Fest," its return and legacy; and we'll hear music from numerous past "Crazy Fest" participants, several who have continued to have successful entertainment careers locally, regionally and even nationally. Hear the "Homegrown Rocker" this Sunday night (April 16) on Q94 Classic Rock - 94.3 FM and online at www.q94classicrock.com, and on 107.1 and 101.3 Jack FM, online at www.1071jack.fm!

In Local Music News...

The musical line-up has been set for the upcoming Blair Creators Festival, happening on Saturday, April 29 at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza. The music will kick off at 12 noon with area folk duo Asbury Lane, followed at 1 p.m. by young rockers After School Special, Vision Manifest at 2 p.m., Hot Fudge Mondaes at 3, Tom Nevers Field at 4, Bad Luck Lover Boys at 5, The Pines at 6, and closing out the day, Sweet Desire starting at 7 p.m. The event will also feature a variety of arts and crafts vendors, food trucks, craft beverages, children’s activities and more. Organizers of the Blair Creators Festival will discuss the event on the April 23 edition of the “Homegrown Rocker.”

Several new area recordings are nearing release…Homer City-based hard rockers Post Traumatik announced that they have completed recording sessions for their forthcoming brand new album. The album, called “Saint Traumatik,” is being recorded at Razorblade Recordings in West Mifflin near Pittsburgh.

Young Altoona punk-rocking force Abstentious will issue their new album, called “The Album…Ever,” on May 5. Containing 15 songs, the album was recorded from January through March at Dark Raven Studio in Altoona, and was produced by Phil Wagner and the group. Abstentious will be one of the opening acts when national recording group (hed)PE performs at McGarvey’s in Altoona on Monday, April 17.

Wax Mekanix, the current creative alter ego of former Nitro drummer and singer Tim Wilson, has submitted his new album to Philadelphia-based indie record label Electric Talon Records. The album should be released later this year.

And the Altoona area music scene was saddened this past week with the passing of longtime area musician Barry Yeager on Wednesday (April 5). Barry’s involvement with area band projects extends back to the 1970s. He most recently was the keyboard player for Altoona-based classic rock group Kickin.’

That's a look at “Local Music News.” Bands and artists with news items to report on the program may email their information to homegrownrocker@gmail.com.
