Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the November 7 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

Thanks to our guest, Somerset County singer/songwriter/guitarist Michael Reich, for providing us with an entertaining two hours this week. Fired up after the Steelers’ victory over Philadelphia, Michael updated us on his music and career, offered thoughts on the Black & Gold and ‘Big Ben’ Roethlisberger, gave fire and brimstone commentary on the Ashlee Simpson “Saturday Night Live” fiasco and more. Along the way, we heard music from Michael’s latest album, “Who’s Minding the Store,” and two lucky listeners phoned in to win copies. We also heard music from early in Michael’s career, with versions of “Someone Else’s War” and “Rusty Nail” recorded in the late 1980’s. And armed with his acoustic guitar, Michael performed one of his newest songs, “Living Day to Day,” live on the air.

Besides Michael, we also aired an interview with Bad Daze lead singer Rob Carolus, the organizer of the Leeper Fire Benefit, which takes place this coming Friday evening, Nov. 12, at City Limits in Altoona. Bad Daze, Hair Force One, Never Enough and a possible fourth band will donate their talents onstage; proceeds from the show will help out area musician Jeff Leeper, his wife Sue and their family; the Leepers lost their home and belongings to a devastating fire in early October.

We also checked on Local Music News, and debuted a new song from J.D. Strum.

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

NORMAN NARDINI – “Love Dog”
THE WORRY KNOT – “Another Golden One”
MICHAEL REICH – “Century Man”
SHADES OF JUNE – “Deele’s Song”
MICHAEL REICH – “Someone Else’s War”
SPITSHINE – “Mandalyn”
MICHAEL REICH – “Wireless”

HOUR TWO:

SHERRI MULLEN – “Home of the Free”
MICHAEL REICH – “Living Day to Day” (performed live on air)
MICHAEL REICH – “Rusty Nail”

MICHAEL REICH – “Line in the Sand”
MATT WAGNER BAND – “Cycle”
MICHAEL REICH – “Live for Today”

This Sunday night, we welcome Altoona-based singer/songwriter/guitarist Matt Wagner to the “Backyard Rocker!” One of the fastest rising names on the local music scene, we will become acquainted with Matt, hear songs from Matt and his band, and Matt will perform a few live on the air for us! In addition, we’ll update Local Music News and review a CD on the “Professor’s CD Corner!” Matt Wagner is in the house, this Sunday night on the “Backyard Rocker!”

In Local Music News…

The Grimm has announced that after three years of recording and spending the past year and a half supporting their “Resurruption” CD, they are taking a break away from live stage action. The Grimm plans to regroup and reformat over the next six months, and resurface next year with new songs, a new sound and a new show. The Grimm does plan to do one show during this hiatus; that show will happen December 17 in the Altoona area.

It’s a “new moon” for State College blues band Gypsy & the Crazymoon, as the group has undergone a complete transformation in recent weeks. Guitarist Brian McHugh and drummer Mark Panek both exited the band recently. Now joining singer, keyboard player and group namesake Gypsy is her 18-year-old son, Jeff, on bass; Roy Schaeffer on guitar, and John Lord on drums. According to Gypsy, the group plans to work on a new CD, and expects to issue the new disc sometime in 2005.

The Victory In Heaven Blues Band has found their new bassist, and has also now added a keyboard player. Bruce Kugler will take over the bass player position vacated by Frank Ciambra, who has left the band to devote more time to his family. V.I.H. has also added keyboard player Larry Adam. Both musicians will make their official debut with V.I.H. later this month at a coffeehouse performance in Orwigsburg on Black Friday. In the interim, singer/guitarist Sterling Koch’s daughter, Kate, has been filling in on bass with V.I.H.

Three area bands will be performing a benefit show at Mount Aloysius College in Cresson on Friday evening, November 19. Punchline, A Week in July and Dropout High will perform, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society. The donation is $5 per person, or $3 for those with a Mt. Aloysius student or staff ID.

Spitshine has been nominated in three categories for the 6th annual Lehigh Valley Music Awards. Singer Bryan Harmony has been nominated for Best Male Vocalist; the group’s latest album, “Transaudio,” has been nominated for Best CD Cover Design; and a single from that album, “Mandalyn,” was nominated for Best Original Song. The Awards presentation will take place on Monday, December 6.
