Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the January 30 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

Thanks to this week’s guests, False Icons, for a very interesting two hours! We got better acquainted with False Icons and their techno-flavored brand of music. We heard songs from the group, who is planning to release their full-length debut CD later this year. We discussed their music, their live show, creative processes, and their career goals. We asked keyboardist/songwriter John Bechdel about the transition from his past stints in Prong, Fear Factory, Killing Joke and Murder Inc. and this new project. Likewise, we also asked Altoona-based drummer Mark Panek about the transition from his past dance, rock and blues band stints to the world of techno music. In all, a very informative interview and discussion!

Along the way, we checked on Local Music News, we flashed back to 1997 for a song from Altoona techno project Two Slice Toaster, and we debuted new tracks from Red Room and Ted McCloskey.

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

SPITSHINE – “Even More”
WHISTLEPIGS – “Rockin’ the Knob”
FALSE ICONS – “Decay”
THE GRIMM – “Flatline Pt. II”
FALSE ICONS – “The Wheel”
DOCTOR’S OFFICE – “Less Affected”
FALSE ICONS – “Tranquilizer”
RED ROOM – “Cry”
TED McCLOSKEY – “With a Different Name”

HOUR TWO:

PROJECT TWELVE(34) – “Restless and Rusted”
FALSE ICONS – “Defective”
TWO SLICE TOASTER – “Diggin’ Me a Hole” (1997, Local Music Flashback)
FALSE ICONS – “Transform”
SPINEBELT – “The Politics of Breaking Down”
FALSE ICONS – “False Icons”

In Local Music News…

We now have more information about the forthcoming “Project Lifeboat” benefit concert to help out Asian tsunami disaster relief. The concert will take place on Sunday afternoon, March 6, from 1 to 8 PM at the Bavarian Hall, 112 South 13th Street in Altoona. Seven bands have been announced for the all-ages show thus far, including Felix & the Hurricanes, Hair Force One, Sidestep, Mergedown from Pittsburgh, Homer’s Army, Cucuplex and Atomic Blonde. Donation at the door will be $10, with proceeds going to Music For Relief, a national tsunami relief effort collaboration between national musicians and the American Red Cross.

And this Monday night, Jan. 31, Crowbar in State College presents a tsunami benefit concert starting at 9 PM. That all-ages show will feature The Nightcrawlers, Body & Soul, Backstreet Law and the Poptart Monkeys. Donation at the door is $5.

Non profit local music website Rockpage held its latest Jam night benefit this past Thursday night at Peter C’s in Altoona. Close to 30 different area musicians participated in the event, which featured appearances from the bands Gypsy & the Crazymoon, the debut of new Altoona band Opposition, a reunion of members of former local rockers Broken Neck, Banditos, plus numerous jam sessions throughout the night. $300 was raised for Rockpage, who will use the monies for further improvements and services to the website.

And the “Backyard Rocker” sends get well wishes out to Tim Homerski of Homer’s Army, and veteran area drummer Tim Yingling. Both musicians are on the mend for heart-related problems; we wish both speedy recoveries.
