Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the February 13 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

This week, we spoke via phone with solo artist and V.I.H. Blues Band guitarist/singer Sterling Koch. Last spring, Sterling suffered a herniated disk in the back of his neck, and his doctors told him it was likely caused by 30 years of wearing a heavy guitar around his neck, combined with bad posture and other factors. Not wanting to re-aggravate the injury, Sterling abandoned conventional guitar for a while, and over the summer months took up lap steel guitar instead. Sterling took his newly-learned instrumental skills and recorded a new album, “How I Spent My Summer Vacation.” Sterling told us his story, and we heard numerous songs from the disc, on which Sterling applies steel guitar to rock, blues, gospel and even jazz.

Along the way, we updated Local Music News, and we reviewed “The Futch,” the debut album by UUU guitarist Doug Mackie’s solo project, Doctor’s Office, on The Professor’s CD Corner.” And we played new tunes from Bret Alexander and Mr. Pink.

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

INSIDE OUT – “Next to You”
VS. THE EARTH – “She Rocks Me”
STERLING KOCH – “Jam Back at the House”
BRET ALEXANDER – “Entrepreneur”
STERLING KOCH – “Good Bye Pork Pie Hat”

This coming Sunday night, we’ll be joined in the studio by Rick Ramsey and several of his friends. The former guitar player for Cambria County rockers Stix and Stones, Rick these days is a solo artist, and he has been involved in recording projects with several of his area music friends. In Local Music News…

A change behind the drum kit for Pittsburgh heavy hitters Skell…Drummer Rich Palone has announced that he is leaving the band, so he can devote more attention to raising his daughter. Rich’s final show with the band will be on February 19 in the Pittsburgh area. No word on the identity of Rich’s replacement behind the Skell drum kit, but we’ll report that information when it becomes available.

Several Johnstown area bands are going through some changes. Pivot has disbanded following the departure of drummer Jason Kirchner to take over the drum position in Lost Ledny. In the interim, Pivot singer Mark Lux and bassist Mike Wozniak will perform as a duo around the Johnstown area. And guitarist Jay Snyder is joining Cumberland, Maryland-based rock band Disasterpiece.

While Johnstown heavy rockers Deviance are on hiatus, two of their members are forming a new band project. Guitarists Jason Straw and Scott Bush are forming a group with former Driven/I Enemy drummer Bob Frye. The name of the new project is House Of Cain.

A change of bass players for Johnstown rockers Flap Jack and Jill. Brad has left the band due to musical differences, and has been replaced by a new bassist named Dustin.

And speedy recovery wishes to Felix Kos of the Hurricanes, who underwent knee surgery last Monday to repair a torn ACL.
