Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the April 10 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

It was a busy, unusual and special week on the “Backyard Rocker.” First, the unusual; due to complications stemming from miscommunication between band members, our scheduled guests, A Broken Union, were unable to come in to be on the program. So instead, we took the opportunity to debut music from several new CD’s that arrived in the “Backyard Rocker” mailbox recently. We featured new songs from Nick Lamb, Vertigo Haze, Katsu, The April Skies and Thunderbrew. We also updated Local Music News.

It was also a special week, as we also took time to remember an area musician who passed away. Jeff Wallack died unexpectedly at his home in Altoona on April 2. He was 40. Jeff was one of the most gifted guitarists to ever play on area stages, performing with such bands over the years as I.O.U., Tom Brunner Group, Rapid Fire, Shattered China, Dash Riprock and The Lodge Lizzards. Jeff and Rapid Fire were one of the bands who first inspired me to begin writing about the area music scene in Pennsylvania Musician Magazine in the late 80’s. As talented as he was, Jeff was also one of the most humble musicians I ever met; he never wanted to be placed upon a pedestal because of his abilities. He also had a great sense of humor, and could often leave people splitting their sides laughing at the most stupid things. Jeff was admired and respected by musicians and fans alike, and he will be sorely missed.

In remembrance of Jeff, we devoted the last 30 minutes of the “Backyard Rocker” to him. We featured never-before heard tracks from a demo Jeff and several musical friends recorded in 1991; we heard Jeff’s guitar talents on two songs recorded live during the “Seven Sundays Of Rock” competition at Cisco’s in Altoona in June, 1987. And we heard Jeff’s lead guitar skills as a guest on two songs from Felix & the Hurricanes, both from the Hurricanes’ 2003 CD “Travelers Not Forgotten.” And we also featured a portion of a spotlight and interview feature I did on Rapid Fire that aired on another Altoona area radio station in 1989.

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

FLIGHT 19 – “3 Of A Kind”
BACKSTREET LAW – “Right Here Right Now”
A BROKEN UNION – “Powerlines Over Crosswalks”
DUSTIN BURLEY – “Broken Mirror”

This coming Sunday night, our guest in the studio will be Altoona-based singer, songwriter and guitarist Dustin Burley. We will hear recorded tracks from Dustin, plus he will perform some songs live for us in the studio. We’ll also check on local music news, and review another local/regional CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” Dustin Burley pays us a visit, this Sunday night on the “Backyard Rocker!”

In local music news…

The local music scene was shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Jeff Wallack last weekend. Jeff was 40. Jeff established himself over the years as one of the Altoona area’s most gifted guitar players, and performed onstage as a member of such groups as I.O.U., the Tom Brunner Group, Rapid Fire, Shattered China, and more recently, the Lodge Lizzards. He also was a salesperson for several years at Jarrett’s Music store. Jeff was well-liked and respected by musicians and fans alike, and he will be greatly missed. Plans are in the works for a special benefit concert in Jeff’s memory, to be held at Aldo’s in Juniata on Friday night, April 29. More details on this benefit as they become available.

Vs. the Earth was forced to cancel a few shows following an injury to their lead singer. Adam Marino broke a bone in his leg while performing a stage dive during one of Vs. the Earth’s shows last weekend. Adam underwent surgery to repair the damage this past Friday, and the group’s shows for this past weekend were canceled. Adam expects to make a full recovery.

The Poptart Monkeys’ lead singer, Tyson Clark, has been battling laryngitis and a nodule on his vocal cord in recent weeks. When doctors told Tyson to refrain from singing for several weeks, the group enlisted his brother Austin, and another guitar player, Joe Heinzelman, to help with vocals while he recovers.

The Marauders will be appearing on a rockabilly compilation album called "Rockin All Over the Place Vol. 2." The compilation is being issued by Bad Habits Records from Brazil. The album is currently being mastered, and should be available through The Marauders’ website, www.themarauderspa.com, and at shows this summer.
