Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the May 1 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

It was a busy, crazy week on the “Backyard Rocker!” Thanks to Jeff Marks and Drew Bentley, the nucleus of Pittsburgh acoustic rockers J.D. Strum, for making the roadtrip in to be our guests this week. Jeff and Drew discussed J.D. Strum’s career to date, their music, live show and debut album, “Just Another Story.” Several lucky listeners called in and won copies of the CD and a T-shirt. In addition, it was a “Harley Qualification Weekend,” and several lucky listeners qualified to have a chance to win Q94’s Harley Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle on June 18 at Altoona’s Lakemont Park. We checked on Local Music News, and reviewed the self-titled debut CD by Bloomsburg to Bangladesh in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” We also debuted a new song from Dropout High.

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

TED McCLOSKEY – “Strange Strange Girls”
SILVER SUNDAY – “I Know”
J.D. STRUM – “The Drag”
MICHAEL REICH – “Dare I Complain”
J.D. STRUM – “Empty Chair”
HALESTORM – “I Bleed”
J.D. STRUM – “Still Chasing” (performed live on the air)
DROPOUT HIGH – “Until We Meet Again”

HOUR TWO:

WISKERBISKET – “Just Like”
NICK LAMB – “Rock and Roll’s My Road”
J.D. STRUM – “I Want to Know”
BLOOMSBURG TO BANGLADESH – “Mikey Might”
J.D. STRUM – “On and On”
TANGERINE – “Elastic World”
J.D. STRUM – “Heart to Pen” (performed live on the air)
J.D. STRUM – “Everything”

This coming Sunday night, our guests in the studio will be Harrisburg-based modern rockers Hierosonic. We’ll meet the band members, learn about their music and career to date, and hear recorded tunes from the group. In addition, we’ll air a conversation with the reunited Dragon Fire, and hear their thoughts regarding their full-blown return to live stage action in the Altoona area May 14. We’ll also update Local Music News and debut more new music from local and regional bands and artists. Hierosonic pays us a visit, this Sunday night on the “Backyard Rocker!”

In Local Music News…

This past Friday night, the area music community came together to celebrate the life and music of the late Jeff Wallack during a special memorial show at Aldo's in Juniata. Musicians, former bandmates, fans and friends from as far away as York and Pittsburgh converged on Aldo's to remember Jeff and one of his greatest gifts, music. The night saw performances from several bands, including CuCuPlex, Choking Faith, Gasoline Dion from Pittsburgh and The Flame Sky. There were also several acoustic performances, including Sean Burgmeier and Silver Sunday's Buck Dickson playing a humorous song Sean and Jeff had been working on. And there were several collaborations featuring Jeff's former bandmates and contemporaries; including a set by Farm Show, featuring Troy and Jody Earnest, John Scarfone, Rich Johnson, Steve McCulley, Rick Ramsey and Dwane Edmiston; and a night-ending jam session featuring Steve Oswalt, Joe George, Bob Watters, Ron Dalansky, Mike Gambardella and more. The performances were inspired and heartfelt, and the atmosphere and electricity throughout the night made this one of the most special nights the Altoona music scene has seen in a long time. Hats off to Ron Nearhoof, Troy Earnest and everyone who had a hand in putting this special night together.

Then this past Saturday, local non-profit organization Get Closer to The Music presented their second annual Music Festival and Workshop at the Booker T. Washington Recreation Building near downtown Altoona. This event was a success, as a number of parents and young people came out to explore the world of music and instruments. Children could touch and play various musical instruments, including drums and percussion instruments, horns, guitars and more. Several instruments and musical accessories were raffled off. The day also saw a visit from Altoona Curve mascot Steamer, and performances from LIDZ, Blind Jonny Death, Faultline, Midnight Flyer and Felix & the Hurricanes. Hats off to Ed Murvine, Cathy Berg and Get Closer To The Music for a very successful event; and we'll let you know about future Get Closer To The Music-sponsored events on Q94's "Backyard Rocker."

And some big news for the band Halestorm…The group has announced that they have signed on with national promotion/management agency McGathy Promotions. McGathy has been instrumental in helping such names as Creed, 3 Doors Down, Shinedown, Chevelle, Puddle Of Mudd and others to break through to the national and international spotlight. Halestorm has announced that they will be making a permanent name change in the near future as part of this big step in their careers. We here at the “Backyard Rocker” wish Halestorm continued success in achieving the heights they are striving for in the music industry.
