Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the June 5 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

It was a busy, busy edition of the “Backyard Rocker!” Thanks to our guests, Third Standard, for enduring the sweltering conditions of the Q94 control room (4 air conditioners in the studio building, guess which one wasn’t working?) to enlighten us on their latest happenings. Third Standard introduced their new drummer, Steve Holtz, and previewed new songs from their forthcoming second CD, “Karma Clean,” being released at the end of this month. In addition, we aired a discussion with musician Dave Blackledge, talking about the 4th annual PA Singer/Songwriter Festival, happening June 11-12 at Shangri-La On The Creek Campground near Lewisburg. We got the lowdown on the event, which features performances from over 20 singer/songwriters from across the country, plus street musicians, a flea market and more.

It was also Q94’s final “Harley Qualification Weekend” before we give away a Harley Fat Boy on June 18 at Altoona’s Lakemont Park. We took two qualifiers during the “Backyard Rocker” (947 qualifiers will have a chance to win the bike on June 18). We also updated Local Music News, and reviewed Bridges And A Bottle’s self-titled CD on “The Professor’s CD Corner” (the review will be posted on the “Backyard Rocker” page on Q94’s website, www.wbxq.com, this coming week). And we debuted new tunes from Rhyne McCormick and Blind Jonny Death. Wow, what a show!

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

FAT VINNY & THE WISEGUYS – “Barroom Floor”
THUNDERBOX – “Tomorrow Will Arrive”
THIRD STANDARD – “Walkin’ On”
BACKSTREET LAW – “Frustrated”
THIRD STANDARD – “Bringing You Down”
RHYNE McCORMICK – “Girl Turned”
THIRD STANDARD – “What Do You Want (From Me)”
K8 – “Orion”

HOUR TWO:

THE MARAUDERS – “Last Call”
BLIND JONNY DEATH – “The Girl Is Hot”
THIRD STANDARD – “Enemy”
BRIDGES AND A BOTTLE – “Pistol”
THIRD STANDARD – “This Time”
DRUGMONEY – “Small Thinking”
THIRD STANDARD – “Karma Clean”
THIRD STANDARD – “I”

This coming Sunday night, our guest will be former local musician Fisher Meehan. In a previous life, Fisher – then known as John – was a member of several prominent regional bands, including Dead Reckoning, Half Tempted and Tucker Barton. These days, Fisher is headquartered in Asheville, North Carolina, and fronts the band Drugmoney, who was featured in “Spin” magazine last year. We will speak with Fisher about Drugmoney, and hear songs from Drugmoney’s debut album, “Mtn Cty Jnk.” Fisher will also have an acoustic guitar and will perform some tunes live for us as well. Fisher Meehan of Drugmoney joins us on the “Backyard Rocker,” this Sunday night!

In Local Music News…

We have more information about the benefit show being put together for the families of the victims of the May 14 Hastings house fire. “Helping Hands for Hastings” will take place on Sunday afternoon, June 26, starting at 2 PM outside of Davey’s Lounge in Hastings. The outdoor, all-ages show will feature performances from the bands Bad Daze, Flight 19, Felix & the Hurricanes, Gin and Juice, Billy & the Inmates, Roadkill, Atomic Blonde, Razen Kane and Falling Higher. There will be other featured entertainment. Food and refreshments will be available. The donation at the gate will be $10, with the proceeds helping out the families of the fire victims. For more information about the show, visit the website www.baddazerocks.com or the “Benefits” section of Rockpage (www.rockpage.net).

One of Harrisburg’s best-known bands is hanging it up. After six years and three CD’s, The Dead 50’s have announced that they are calling it quits, citing family and personal reasons. We’ll keep an eye out for any new projects rising from the ashes.

On the other side of the coin, a previously disbanded group has reformed with a new line-up. York’s Ninetail has reformed, featuring three members from their previous incarnation – lead guitarist Don Belsh, rhythm guitarist John Evan, and bassist Jose Cabrera. The group has added J. William Heitmann on lead vocals, Jerad Gohn on keys and samples, and drummer Max Melton. Ninetail plans to begin recording a promotional CD in late July.

Backstreet Law has officially released their brand new CD, “Frustrated.” The album is now available at the group’s live shows and through their website, www.backstreetlaw.com. The group has also announced that they will be opening for Pennsylvania national recording group Breaking Benjamin at Crowbar in State College on Monday, July 18th.
