Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the August 28 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

This week, a change of pace. When we have musical guests on the program, we frequently ask what their long-term goals are in the music business. Often, the response is to get signed to a recording deal. This week, we explored some of the bands and musicians from the area and across the state who achieved that goal – getting signed to a major label recording deal. We heard from some of those Pennsylvania bands and artists who went on to great success on the national/international level, as well as from a number who did not. Along the way, we heard from several musicians about their major label experiences, including Gerry Stanek (who played guitar with national bands The Lost and Outcry in the 1990’s), Shawn Shultz (guitarist for Altoona’s Edison, who released an album with a national label in the 1990’s), plus past comments about major labeldom from Jeffrey Gaines and former Badlees guitarist/singer Jeff Feltenberger.

In addition, we spoke with Ron Carnevali of the Johnstown Area Heritage Association about this year’s annual Johnstown Folkfest, which happens on Labor Day Weekend. Ron gave us the lowdown on this year’s Folkfest, and we heard music from one of the groups who will be performing this year, Red Elvises. A busy show!

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

BILLY PRICE BAND – “I Can’t Stand It” (1997; Billy sang for guitar legend Roy Buchanan’s band in the mid 70’s, appearing on two national releases)
NORMAN NARDINI & THE TIGERS – “Give It Everything You Got” (1989)
THE LOST – “Pretty Girl” (1990, featuring Gerry Stanek)
OUTCRY – “Who Are You” (1996, featuring Gerry Stanek)
DAKOTA – “Lady” (1980)
THE HOOTERS – “Where Do The Children Go” (1986)
JEFFREY GAINES – “Right My Wrongs” (1998)
THE SHARKS – “Only Time Will Tell” (1986)
LIVE – “Lightning Crashes” (live, 1994)

HOUR TWO:

THE CLARKS – “Born Too Late” (2000)
THE BADLEES – “Fear Of Falling” (1995)
RED ELVISES – “Boogie On The Beach” (Johnstown Folkfest)
EDISON – “Bracing” (1997)
RAGING SLAB – “Pearly” (1993, featuring Mark Middleton and Greg Strzempka)
HALESTORM – “It’s Not You” (just signed to Atlantic, recording due Spring 2006)
DARCIE MINER BAND – “Orphan” (2001)
BREAKING BENJAMIN – “Polyamorous” (2002)

Since next weekend is Labor Day Weekend, we’re giving area bands the weekend off, and thus there are no guests on next Sunday’s program. Instead, we’ll get you caught up on new local and regional CD releases that have arrived in recent weeks, and update Local Music News.
