Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the February 5 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

We knew full well that we weren’t the main game in town this night. If you got bored with the Super Bowl, or weren’t a football fan and cared less about the game and tuned in the “Backyard Rocker” instead, thank you for the support! This week was the annual “Super Bowl Widow’s Special,” and we spotlighted the ladies of the area and state music scene. We heard a lot of talented female singers, but we also showcased a few lady instrumentalists as well. Along the way, we introduced new tracks from The Chickz, Denise Baldwin, Spoonchatter, Rachel Allen, Sherri Mullen, Halestorm and Lisa Bodnar. We also checked on Local Music News

Here is this week’s playlist (ladies being spotlighted are in parentheses, where applicable):

HOUR ONE:

GYPSY & THE CRAZYMOON – “Steeler Fan Boogie” (Gypsy – keyboards)
THE CHICKZ – “Hey, Phil (Punxsutawney Phil Song)”
SILVER SUNDAY – “Naked” (Cathie – vocals)
DENISE BALDWIN – “Giants Tumble”
SPOONCHATTER – “Rudy” (Jen Shuty – saxophone)
JOHN BAKER & SHERRY LENDER – “Closer to Fine”
MAXWELL STRAIT – “Babblefish” (Molly Countermine – vocals/keyboards)
THE NIGHTCRAWLERS – “African Echo” (Aeb Byrne – flute/keyboards)
RACHEL ALLEN – “Who Would I Be”
K8 – “Orion”
SHERRI MULLEN – “Now You’ll Hurt”

HOUR TWO:

HALESTORM – “Takes My Life” (live) (Lzzy Hale – vocals/guitar)
DARCIE MINER – “One Big Line to the Top of the Sky”
KAIROS – “Tryst in the Silent Night” (Shar Sturm – bass/backing vocals)
AMY K. & THE LOVE STOMP SHOW – “Runaway”
TRACE MORAN – “Revenge”
V.I.H. BLUES BAND – “Kiss the Blues Goodbye” (Kate Koch – bass)
DIVE – “Picture” (Jennifer Bell – vocals)
DEJA VUDOO – “How Can I Tell” (Tina Marie – vocals/guitar)
LISA BODNAR – “Maybe I Did”
CRYSTAL CAMERON – “Stand”

Next Sunday night, we welcome Spoonchatter into our studio. Spoonchatter follows a unique path, with a jazz/pop-infused rock sound driven by keys and sax, with no guitar. We’ll get to know the band members better, and hear tracks from Spoonchatter’s latest CD, Homespun; plus you’ll have chances to call and win a copy! In addition, after this past week’s passing of popular area musician John Baker (see Local Music News below), we will devote the last 30 minutes of the show in memory of John, playing some of his music and hearing some sound clips from his “Backyard Rocker” appearances. Spoonchatter and a tribute to John Baker, next Sunday night on the “Backyard Rocker!”

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

FEB. 19 – Justin Mackovyak
FEB. 26 – Michael Reich
MAR. 5 – Felix & the Hurricanes (8th Anniversary Special)
MAR. 12 – Acoustic Jam Special 5
MAR. 19 – Icarus Witch

In Local Music News…

It was a sad week for this area’s music scene, following the sudden passing of a popular longtime area musician. John Baker passed away this past Tuesday, from an apparent heart attack. He was 44. John sang, played bass and guitar in numerous bands and other projects dating back to the 1980’s, including such names as Axis, Poverty Boy, Tugger, Super Fat Tuesday, Smokin’ J’s and others. He also was a solo performer and partnered in a duet with his girlfriend, Sherry Lender. John and Sherry were guests on Q94’s “Backyard Rocker” several times; and John even worked for Q94 Radio during the station’s early years in the early 1980’s. A special benefit concert in memory of John is presently being organized; the show will take place at Electric Avenue in Houtzdale, and more details of the show will be announced soon. Next Sunday evening on the “Backyard Rocker,” we will devote the last half hour of the program in memory of John Baker, and feature some of John’s music over the years, audio clips from his “Backyard Rocker” appearances and more.

Bloomsburg singer, songwriter, guitarist and humorist Dave Blackledge is helping out in the recovery efforts from Hurricane Katrina. Last month, Dave traveled to New Orleans as part of Bill Hudson's "Feel Good Tour", sponsored by MusicLink.com and GetDragonFly.com. Dave and other musicians are performing free concerts in rescue shelters, medical facilites and on the streets. Also as part of this effort, musical instruments are being collected for kids who lost theirs in the hurricane. Dave Blackledge recently finished his new CD, Spread it on Thick, which will be available soon.

And a grassroots effort is under way to try to change a provision of the state’s Liquor Code that greatly impacts live music. Under the present Liquor Code, if a loudspeaker of any volume level can be heard outside a liquor-licensed establishment, that establishment can be cited or fined by state law enforcement. A concerned group of citizens, bar owners, musicians and music fans are meeting in hopes of raising awareness of this issue with area state legislators, with the goal of changing the Liquor Code provision to one that is more reasonable for the live entertainment industry to work within. The next meeting to discuss this issue will be held next Sunday evening at 6 PM at Magoo’s in Cresson. Any concerned musicians or bar owners are urged to attend.
