Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the July 29 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.7 and WBXQ 94.3. The show is brought to you by The Altoona Curve (www.altoonacurve.com), “Everybody’s Hometown Team!”

Thanks to our frequent-flyer guest and originator of the Q94 Double-Power salute, Rhyne McCormick (www.rhynemccormick.com). We learned about the latest Rhyne happenings, as well as progress with his new band Last Chance. We played tracks from Rhyne’s CD’s, plus our guest brought his acoustic guitar and played two songs live on the air. We also updated Local Music News, and we debuted new songs from Christine Havrilla and Milkshake Jones.

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

MICHAEL REICH – “Turning on a Dime”
HANNAH BINGMAN – “The Greater Picture”
RHYNE McCORMICK – “Soul Dust”
CHRISTINE HAVRILLA – “Use Me”
RHYNE McCORMICK – “Open Wounds” (performed live on the air)
RHYNE McCORMICK – “Don’t Think”
FELIX & THE HURRICANES – “Free”
LAST CHANCE – “She’s Gone” (performed live on the air 4/15/07)
HOLIS – “Ignorance”
MILKSHAKE JONES – “(Where You Goin’) Suzanne?”
SPOONCHATTER – “Dance Your Cares Away”

HOUR TWO:

THE FRED GARVIN PROJECT – “Wild Crazy Nights”
LOWJACK – “Vacation from Everyone”
RHYNE McCORMICK – “How Long” (performed live on the air)
RHYNE McCORMICK – “Molly’s Kitchen”
EDWIN TICHENOR – “Altoonia”
RHYNE McCORMICK – “Say You Loved Me”
RHYNE McCORMICK – “5104”
THE NIGHTCRAWLERS – “African Echo”

Next Sunday night, it’s the return of the “Cover Song Special.” Many local and regional bands do cover songs out of necessity, in order to stay employed on area nightspot stages. But more than a few area bands have come up with interesting and intriguing arrangements on other artists’ material, and we’ll be exploring some of the more creative remakes done by local artists. Hear how area musicians re-do numbers by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Lou Reed, the Beach Boys, Johnny Cash, Madonna, Tony Orlando & Dawn, Sam & Dave, Abba and more! The “Cover Song Special” edition of the “Backyard Rocker,” next Sunday night!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

AUG. 12 – Jackson Monsour
AUG. 26 – Ron Carnevali (Johnstown Folkfest preview)
SEPT. 2 – Spirit Lost
SEPT. 9 – Tony Mollick Project
SEPT. 16 – Fayted
SEPT. 23 – Chapter 5 (tentative)
OCT. 7 – Justin Mack
OCT. 14 – Acoustic Jam Special 8
OCT. 28 – White Witch (Halloween Special)
NOV. 4 – Acalasia
NOV. 11 – Our Broken Silence
NOV. 25 – Way Down East

In Local Music News…

The line-up has been set for 17th annual “End of Summer Jam” benefit concert, which will take place on Sunday, August 26 at the Cresson Sportsmen’s Club, with proceeds benefiting Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The event will kick off at 12 noon with the band Spirit Lost, and continue with performances from The Verge, the Tony Mollick Project, Felix & the Hurricanes, The Red Arrow, Half Tempted, Nitekast and Tie Down. Donation at the gate will be $10, with kids under 12 admitted free. Anybody under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Food and refreshments will be provided by the Cresson Sportsmen’s Club. Parking is free.

Another benefit concert will be taking place on Labor Day weekend in Roaring Spring to help out Easter Seals. The Day Of Rock Benefit will take place at Shawnee Park in Roaring Spring. The show will begin at 1 PM, and feature music from the bands Hair Force One, Fayted, Bad Daze, Way Down East, Spirit Lost and Lies, Inc. There will also be a pig roast. Advance ticket cost for the pig roast and show is $20 per couple, and $10 per couple for attending the show only.

Further west, the eighth annual Rock For Life cancer benefit concert will take place on Friday and Saturday, August 3-4, at the Iselin Ballfield in Iselin, west of Indiana. Proceeds from this year’s benefit will help out David Heidel, a six-year old child from Mount Union battling leukemia. The hours of the benefit will be Friday from 6 PM to midnight; and Saturday from noon to midnight. Bands and performers involved in this year’s event include Skell, Solegion, The Alluminati, Daggermouth, Ill-Fated, After The Fall, The Divide from New York City, Altered Ending from Akron, Emma Rankin from New Zealand and more. Donation for the entire two days is $15 per person. For more information about the concert, visit the Rock For Life website, www.rockforlifeconcert.com.

One of the region’s most popular bands is stepping aside from the live stage. The band Til December (formerly Backstreet Law) has decided to disband indefinitely. In a mutual and very amicable agreement between the members, the band has come to the conclusion that after many years of constant touring, everyone is in need of a break. Although the band has not totally ruled out regrouping for future shows or recordings, it is definite that Til December's final performances will happen in August and September.

The Harrisburg-based party band Cheez has reformed with a new lineup, which features a few names that should be familiar to local music fans. Joining lone founding member Joey G on bass is former Wiskerbisket singer/guitarist Doug Snook, and Altoona native and former Something Fluid drummer Len Lechene. The new Cheez line-up will begin playing out in October, and has a number of shows already lined up in the Q94 listening area.

In band personnel moves, the Wheeling/Pittsburgh-based band Dofka has found a new lead singer, Andrew D’Cagna. The group is also working on a new EP called Humanity Bleak, which should be available soon.
