Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the April 13 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBXQ 94.3.

With no guests scheduled this week, we took the opportunity to check out a number of new local and recordings submitted to the “Backyard Rocker” in recent weeks. Along the way, we debuted new songs from Johnny J. Blair, Zupe & Nichols, The Tamboureens, Comic Book Heroes, The Rooftops, Frank Amanze, October Allied and The Black Orkid. We also updated Local Music News, and we reviewed not one, not two, but THREE new CD’s in “The Professor’s CD Corner;” as we reviewed the three studio albums issued last fall by State College/Vermont-based ensemble Cootie Brown – Meltdown, Cootie Brown Strikes Back and Out of the Bleu. (The reviews can be read in the “Backyard Rocker” section of the message board area on Q94’s website, www.wbxq.com.) Another busy week!

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

FELIX & THE HURRICANES – “Issues”
WAY DOWN EAST – “Freezer Champ”
JOHNNY J. BLAIR – “(I Wanna Bein) Pennsylvania”
ZUPE & NICHOLS – “Captain & Coke”
THE TAMBOUREENS – “Be My Umbrella”
COOTIE BROWN – “Universe”
COMIC BOOK HEROES – “Pride”

HOUR TWO:

ROADKILL – “The Public Service Announcement from the Anti Valentine’s Day Council”
WHITE WITCH – “Prince of Darkness”
THE ROOFTOPS – “One Million Dollars”
COOTIE BROWN – “Wonder”
FRANK AMANZE – “Just One More Drink”
CHRIS V. & THE STANLEY STREET BAND – “Freedom”
OCTOBER ALLIED – “New Boot Screw”
COOTIE BROWN – “The Cat’s Pajamas”
THE BLACK ORKID – “Nothing More to Say”

Next Sunday night, our guests in the studio will be Chris V. & the Stanley Street Band. This group is the result of the transformation of the former Grade E, with singer/guitarist Chris “V” Vipond and bassist Mike Stanley joined by Mike Z on cajon (a Latin box drum). We’ll hear recorded songs by the group, and they will play several live on the program; and according to Chris, he might be bringing a few musical guests along for a jam session as well! We’ll also hear tunes from other area bands and artists, and review The Green Onions’ Down the Drain CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” Chris V & the Stanley Street Band visit the “Backyard Rocker,” next Sunday night!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

APR. 27 – Zupe & Nichols
MAY 4 – Solegion
MAY 11 – JustMegan
MAY 18 – Rise Phoenix Rise (tentative)
MAY 25 – Memorial Day Special

In Local Music News…

In band news...As previously reported on the "Backyard Rocker," former members of Til December and Stept On have formed a new band. Former Til December guitarist Jeremy Edge has joined forces with the former Stept On rhythm section of bassist Adam Zimmer and drummer Josh Hetrick, and have hired on lead singer Charlotte Kopp from Anchorage, Alaska. The new band will be called Candlelight Red. They are currently working on some original songs, and plan to hit regional stages beginning in June.

A new band project has formed from the remnants of the former Homer's Army. The K.D. Griff Project is a new classic rock band featuring former Homer's Army members Mike "Griff" Griffiths on bass and vocals and Kim Dull on drums and vocals. The group has announced the addition of Northern Cambria's Greg Yuhas to sing and play guitar.

Former This Calling bassist Bill Fischer is back in a band. Bill has joined up with Altoona rockers Decision Day.

And to reference a Todd Rundgren song, they'll be banging on the drums all evening this Monday night, April 14, at Saint Francis University in Loretto. The Saint Francis University World Drumming Ensemble, directed by Rusted Root drummer Jim Donovan, will present their 2008 Spring Concert at the university's JFK Auditorium beginning at 7 PM. Admission to the evening of drumming and song is free.
