Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the August 29 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBRX 94.3 and WBXQ 94.7.

Despite having no in-studio guests or specials, it was a busy week on the “Backyard Rocker!” With Johnstown Folkfest and the new Cambria City Ethnic Festival filling the Flood City with music on Labor Day Weekend, we spoke with representatives of both events via phone to get the lowdown on both. Thanks to Monsignor Raymond Balta for chatting with us about the Cambria City festival, and to Shelley Johannsen of the Johnstown Area Heritage Association for speaking with us about Folkfest.

We also debuted a lot of new music on the program, from Dreamcatcher, Endless Mike & the Beagle Club, The Non-Domestiks, Wits End, Josa Step and Divine Tragedy. We featured new live music from Fat Vinny & the Wiseguys, recorded just last weekend during the 14th annual “End Of Summer Jam” benefit concert in Cresson. We took a look at “Local Music News,” and examined Josa Step’s latest album, “Pearls,” in detail on the “Professor’s CD Corner.”

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

FELIX & THE HURRICANES – “Backyard Rocker Rocks”
THE BADLEES – “Bendin’ the Rules”
DREAMCATCHER – “Functional/Dysfunctional”
FAT VINNY & THE WISEGUYS – “Before You ‘Cuse Me”
ENDLESS MIKE & THE BEAGLE CLUB – “The Only Boss I Listen to Is Springsteen”
MERCY SEAT – “Holy Eyes”
JOHN CHARNEY & WHITE MOJO – “Evil”
THE NON-DOMESTIKS – “Just a Game”

HOUR TWO:

SILVER SUNDAY – “Naked”
WITS END – “Legacy”
REVOLVER – “Don’t Walk Away”
JOSA STEP – “Alone”
DAVE DiSTEFANO w/GRINNING MOB – “Light The Fire, Get Down”
DIVINE TRAGEDY – “Dreamscape”
DEVIANCE – “Blind Leading the Blind”

This Sunday night, we’ll again be debuting lots of new music we’ve received over the past several weeks, as well as breaking out some area bands and artists we haven’t played on the show in a while. There will be local music news and the Professor’s CD Corner, and we’ll be making a special announcement about an exciting new force the “Backyard Rocker” will be partnering with to help further promote and spread the word about this area’s music scene. So be sure to catch all the excitement this Sunday night on the “Backyard Rocker!”

In local music news…

After showing up onstage with the band Pivot several weeks ago during the Rock The House benefit concert in Johnstown, former Badwrench/Stept On frontman Chuck Budzina has found a new band home. The band Flap Jack’n’Jill has announced the addition of Chuck, who replaces Shane Lee, who departed the group due to musical differences. Chuck made his debut with Flap Jack’n’Jill this weekend in the Johnstown area.

Three former members of Harrisburg’s Julian Fist reportedly have formed a new band. The new group, called Rectifier, features singer Mitch Taylor, guitarist Scott Michajluk and bassist Troy Lehman. The group will play acoustic shows initially while it seeks a drummer to complete the lineup.

The band Ever Since Yesterday has decided to call it quits. The band members have decided to part ways and pursue different directions. We here at the “Backyard Rocker” wish them success in their future endeavors.

A change behind the drum kit for the band Axum…Former Dunston Ashe/Seven Souls drummer Jim Hinckley has taken over skin-beating duties, replacing Chris Monteagudo.

Banditos have parted ways with singer and guitarist Wally Archer. The group is continuing as a trio.

Johnstown heavy rockers Deviance have announced the addition of former Driven and Frayed guitarist Scott Bush to their roster.

Deviance will be one of five bands taking part in the first annual Too Loud Festival, which takes place on Saturday, September 11 at Buffingtown Township Community Park, located south of Johnstown on Route 403 between Dilltown and Strongstown. The show will begin at 4 PM, and feature performances by Deviance, Martyrdom, 521, Lucid Confusion and Lost Ledny.

A special memorial motorcycle run and music event is taking place in late September to remember a friend of the area music scene. The first annual Jeff Showalter Memorial Ride will take place on Saturday, September 25, with proceeds benefiting the Jeff Showalter Memorial Scholarship Fund. Registration for the event starts at 10 AM, with the run itself starting at 12 noon from Beerbellies in Duncansville. Donation to ride is $15 for single riders, $25 for couples. The run itself will feature several stops, and will finish at the Blair County A.B.A.T.E. grounds, located at Campbell Hill near Hollidaysburg. A post-run party at the grounds will feature performances by Felix & the Hurricanes, Banditos and Half Tempted. Jeff Showalter lost his life in a motorcycle accident in April.
