Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the Feb. 8 edition of Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM.

Thanks to our guests this week, John Cimino and Michael Hughes, returning to the show to discuss John’s studio project Thunderbox (www.thunderboxmusic.com). We learned the Thunderbox story and heard numerous tunes from the latest CD, Concrete and Gasoline. Several lucky listeners called in to win Thunderbox CD prize packs featuring both Concrete and Gasoline and the first Thunderbox CD, 2002’s Postcard from the Sun. We updated Local Music News, and broke out a 1974 tune by Pittsburgh’s Diamond Reo for a Local Music Flashback, marking the recent passing of that group’s drummer, Rob Johns (see Local Music News below). We debuted new tunes from Iroquois Confederacy and Nate Myers & the Aces, and also reviewed Appalachian Translator’s debut CD, Consider an Invasion, in “The Professor’s CD Corner.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

VS. THE EARTH – “Lightswitch”
FLIGHT 19 – “3 of a Kind”
THUNDERBOX – “Incredible Girl”
KYX – “I Don’t Wanna See Your Back”
THUNDERBOX – “Road to Nevermore”
DIAMOND REO – “Ain’t That Peculiar” (1974, Local Music Flashback)
THUNDERBOX – “My Favorite Pain”
IROQUOIS CONFEDERACY – “Cellophane Blues”
FELIX & THE HURRICANES – “Icy You”

HOUR TWO:

NATE MYERS & THE ACES – “Jager & Waffles”
ROADKILL – “Public Service Announcement from the Anti-Valentine’s Day
Council”
THUNDERBOX – “Novacaine”
APPALACHIAN TRANSLATOR – “False Alarm”
THUNDERBOX – “Last One Out”
THE WORRY KNOT – “Rain Keeps Falling”
THUNDERBOX – “Turnaround”
THUNDERBOX – “Can’t Do It Without You”

This Sunday night, the “Homegrown Rocker” presents another installment of the Cover Song Special. We will hear how local and regional bands and artists interpret other artists’ material, from popular hits to more obscure and influential numbers. We’ll feature studio cuts and live concert footage, update Local Music News and even include a cover from a past band for a Local Music Flashback. The Cover Song Special returns to the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

FEB. 22 – MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE RECAP SPECIAL
MAR. 8 – MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE GUEST (TO BE ANNOUNCED)
MAR. 22 – DRAIN THE SORROW
APR. 12 – CHRIS VIPOND & THE STANLEY STREET BAND

In Local Music News…

This month, Schuylkill County blues trio 61 South is starting the writing process toward their new CD, for an expected release next winter. The group has also announced that steel guitarist Sterling Koch will be collaborating with renowned songwriter Mike Naydock on some new band tunes. Naydock was a contributing lyricist for The Badlees and wrote a number of their songs including the national hit "Angeline Is Coming Home," "Running Up That Hill" and "Song For A River" among others.

Some sad news from Pittsburgh to report…Rob Johns, the original drummer for ‘70s era Pittsburgh rockers Diamond Reo, died on January 9 at the age of 56. Johns was involved in rock and blues projects through the ‘90s, including a stint with The Silencers. He also played guitar and sang. A special benefit to help Johns’ surviving family with funeral expenses took place at Moondogs in Blawnox (north of Pittsburgh) on Jan. 25; and featured Johns’ former Diamond Reo bandmates Norman Nardini, Warren King and Frank Czuri, part of a cast of some 20 veteran Pittsburgh area musicians.
