Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the June 24 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

The "Homegrown Rocker" was in attendance at the previous weekend's 15th annual Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival, a celebration of bluegrass and folk music that took place at Quiet Oaks Campground near Cross Fork (in the northern PA Wilds) and raised funds for the Lupus Foundation of Pennsylvania. While there, we caught up with and recorded a conversation with Gary Antol and Ray Bruckman of Pittsburgh folk and bluegrass group Jakob's Ferry Stragglers! We learned the group's story (including where Jakob's Ferry is located, a small dock site along the Monongahela River in Washington County), and heard music from their brand new album, Poison River. We also debuted new tunes from The Clarks, Gabe Stillman, Colebrook Road and Ted McCloskey & Molly Countermine, updated "Local Music News," dug a 1995 classic from The Badlees from the archive for this week's "Local Music Flashback," and stepped "Across State Lines" to hear music from Asheville, North Carolina's Fireside Collective (who also performed at Smoked Country Jam).

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

CHRIS RATTIE & THE NEW REBELS - "My Mountain"
THE CLARKS - "She's On Fire"
JAKOB'S FERRY STRAGGLERS - "When the Redbud Blooms"
GABE STILLMAN - "Ain't Gonna Change"
JAKOB'S FERRY STRAGGLERS - "Things Take Time"
VAN WAGNER - "Shikellamy"
JAKOB'S FERRY STRAGGLERS - "Benezette Blues"
COLEBROOK ROAD - "The Road We Travel"

HOUR TWO:

MAMA CORN - "Smoked Country Jam"
TIM WOODS - "Every Day"
JAKOB'S FERRY STRAGGLERS - "Poison River"
THE CROOKED LINE - "Slow Down"
JAKOB'S FERRY STRAGGLERS - "St. Anne's Prayer"
THE BADLEES - "Fear of Falling" (1995, Local Music Flashback)
JAKOB'S FERRY STRAGGLERS - "Moonlight Gown"
FIRESIDE COLLECTIVE - "By the Look of It" (Across State Lines)
TED McCLOSKEY & MOLLY COUNTERMINE - "Long Live Low Tide"
BLACK RIDGE PABG - "Locusts"

With no guests scheduled on our next program, we will take the opportunity to empty the mailboxes and explore new recordings that have arrived in recent weeks. We will debut some new tunes along the way, as well as update "Local Music News," dig into the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," step "Across State Lines" to hear music from an independent band or artist from outside the state, and review The Crooked Line's Far From Perfect CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Upcoming guests and specials include:

JULY 8 - Cover Song Special
JULY 15 - Psycho Prophecy
JULY 22 - Dylan E. Miller
JULY 29 - Native Alloys
AUG. 5 - Tukurpa
AUG. 19 - We Came From Space
AUG. 26 - Behind the Grey
SEPT. 9 - Whiskey Pie

(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

In Local Music News...

The Pittsburgh music scene is mourning the tragic death of Matt Pacacha in a house fire on June 11. Matt was the guitarist for Pittsburgh-based heavy metal group Conflict Cycle, and is survived by a fiancee and three children. A fundraising event to benefit Matt's children will be held on Friday, August 24 at the Hard Rock Cafe in Pittsburgh.

The Benefit for Alan Delbert McConnell will take place on Saturday night, June 30, at the Barnesboro VFW in Northern Cambria. The benefit will start at 5:30 p.m., and will feature performances from the Morgan James Band, Nag Champions Mystery Band, Talisman, Rick Ramsey Group, Rust, Acoustic Stew, Downshift, the Backyard Rockers and Negan. Donation at the door will be $5 per person, and the public is welcome to attend. Proceeds will help Alan, an area musician and sound engineer who has been battling Stage 4 cancer.
