Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the April 21 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

This week, we presented the inaugural installment of our "Wood-n-Strings Special!" We celebrated the acoustic and unplugged side of the area music spectrum, airing a wide assortment of sounds, spanning acoustic rock, folk, blues, country, alternative and more! Along the way, we updated "Local Music News," pulled a 1974 number from State College's MorningSong for our "Local Music Flashback," and reviewed two CD's in "The Professor's CD Corner" - John Vento's Love, Lust & Other Wreckage during the first hour, and Chuck Owston's Blue Steel Blues during the second hour!

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

BISCUIT JAM - "When I'm Gone"
JACK PYERS - "Cowboy Song"
BORN & THE BEANSTALK - "The Day You Went Away"
JIM DONOVAN & THE SUN KING WARRIORS - "Love on Me"
STRIPED MAPLE HOLLOW - "Cog in a Wheel"
MAMA CORN - "Nobody Died"
CROSSROADS DUO - "Nothin' But the Blues"
JOHN VENTO - "Baby Blues"
DOUG FORSHEY & CHRIS STRAIT - "Skeleton Man"
DYLAN E. MILLER - "Wallflower" (performed live on air 7/22/18)
RED PAINT - "Where Giants Play"

HOUR TWO:

PURE CANE SUGAR - "Designated Driver"
HANNAH BINGMAN - "Deep Water"
BILL FERRELL - "Fast Train to Hell"
CHUCK OWSTON - "Morning Train"
THE EVERGREENS - "Both Sides of the Bed"
MORNINGSONG - "Look at Me" (1974, Local Music Flashback)
NATE GATES - "Cassey"
DOUG IRWIN - "The Bridges That I Burn"
DAN STONEROOK - "Changing"
PATRICK McGINNIS - "Winds of Change"
CALLIE TOMBLIN - "Miss the Feeling"
THE CREW OF THE HALF MOON - "Luxury"

For our next program, we go back to the mailboxes to check out yet more new local and regional recordings that have arrived in recent weeks! We'll also dig out a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, and step "Across State Lines" to hear a tune from an independent band or artist from outside the state! Listen to the "Homegrown Rocker," Sunday night (April 14) at 8 p.m. on 105.9 Qwik-Rock on your FM radio dial, or stream it live online at www.1059qwikrock.com!

The organizers of Altoona’s First Frontier Festival have announced the performer slate for this year’s second annual event, which will take place on Friday and Saturday, July 26 and 27. The Friday half of the festival will take place at Altoona’s Mishler Theatre, with a paid concert featuring Pittsburgh favorites The Clarks and rockabilly guitar great Bill Kirchen. Saturday’s half of the festival will begin at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza with a free concert event featuring four area bands: Stephanie & the Wild Hearts, R2B2, Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats and Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors. The festival will then wrap up on Saturday evening with another paid concert at the Mishler Theatre featuring Grammy award-winning bluegrass performers Steep Canyon Rangers, along with Sirius Satellite Radio Outlaw Country personality and singer-songwriter Elizabeth Cook. Tickets for the two paid concerts are $25 per person, and can be obtained at the Mishler box office, by phone, or by visiting the website www.mishlertheatre.org. The Altoona First Frontier Festival is being presented by Altitude Entertainment and the Altoona Mirror, and is sponsored by Altoona First Savings Bank.

A musical passing of the torch occurred at McGarvey’s in Altoona on April 19. The band Time with Donny Burns marked the final night with both Donny Burns Sr. and Jr. in the lineup. Donny Sr. is continuing Time with Donny Burns with his own new songs and direction, while Donny Jr. and the rest of the group " guitarist Nick Stahlman, bassist James Arroway and drummer Rob Chisholm " will continue under the name Donny Burns & the 3rd Degree. They're working on songs and an album as well. Donny Sr. described the night as “graduation night” for his son and his young roster of musicians. Watch for both band projects on area stages in the coming weeks and months.
