Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the November 3 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

It was musical darkness on the radio this week, as Johnstown metal mongerers Darkness On The Radio joined us, in a conversation recorded on Halloween Night in the Dungeon at Ebensburg's Castle Pub! (It couldn't have been a more perfect setting for a "Homegrown Rocker" inquisition - thanks to Josh at the Castle Pub for allowing us the space!) We met the band members and discussed their music, including their brand new CD, Snake Eyes, and we played songs from the album as well. We dug into frontman Jason Straw and bassist Greg Hatch's musical past, and dug out a 2009 number from their past band, The Embalmed, for this week's "Local Music Flashback!" We also reviewed Roadkill's Still Alive and...Well? CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

SKELL - "Everything's Fine"
NEGAN - "Obsolete"
DARKNESS ON THE RADIO - "Snake Eyes (Watching You)"
SMALL TOWN HORROR SHOW - "Gather Your Guns"
DARKNESS ON THE RADIO - "Heavenless"
THE SNIPPED - "All We Know"
DARKNESS ON THE RADIO - "They"

HOUR TWO:

FYRE - "The Life and Times of a Demi-God"
DARKNESS ON THE RADIO - "Excommunicado"
ROADKILL - "You Should Be Ashamed"
DARKNESS ON THE RADIO - "Piss and Venom"
THE EMBALMED - "What Would Judas Do" (2009, Local Music Flashback)
DARKNESS ON THE RADIO - "Heretic"

We return to the mailboxes on our next program to explore more new recordings from the area music scene that have arrived in recent days. We'll also update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, step "Across State Lines" to hear music from an independent band or artist from outside of PA, and review a new local CD (or two?) in "The Professor's CD Corner!" Listen to the "Homegrown Rocker," Sunday night (November 10) at 8 p.m. on 105.9 Qwik-Rock on your FM radio dial, or stream it live online at www.1059qwikrock.com!

In Local Music News...

We reported last year that Harpo singer and keyboardist John “Lloyd” Kistner had been sidelined by a stroke during late summer of last year. Although not fully recovered from that stroke, John will be returning to action as half of an acoustic project with his Harpo bandmate, Billy “Rock” Kerstetter. The duo will be called Gas House Alley. According to Billy, this project had been in the works long before John’s stroke, and they decided to put it together as therapy as John continues to recover. Gas House Alley’s debut performance will take place on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, November 27, at McGuigan’s Pub in Sunbury. Other shows are being announced for the remainder of 2019 and early 2020.

And the bands and performers have been set for the Guitars For Vets event taking place next Saturday at the Oak Spring Winery in Pinecroft north of Altoona. Rogan Allen will kick off the event at 4 p.m., followed by Chad Patterson, Dave Howsare, a performance of Guitars For Vets instructors and students, and The Free Wine Band. Admission to the event is free, but monetary and instrument donations will be accepted. Guitars For Vets is a nonprofit organization that helps military veterans dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder " PTSD " by connecting them with instruments so they can build joy and purpose through self-expression and relationship-building.
