Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the January 26 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

Thanks to this week's guest, area musician and recording engineer Rik Golden, for joining us on the program! Rik has just issued his second solo album, Hold On, continues to front his own band plus play bass with area punk rockers The Snipped, and record area bands in his own Golden Studio - we spoke with Rik about all of these things, and played songs off the new album! Along the way, we updated "Local Music News," dug into the archive to pull out a 2008 number from We Are Forever for this week's "Local Music Flashback," and reviewed Medusa's Disco's Orphic Grimoire CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

SILVER SCREEN - "Talk to Me"
BLACK RIDGE - "Celebration"
RIK GOLDEN - "Hold On"
ABOVE THE RADAR - "Ride"
RIK GOLDEN - "His Last One"
BAD LUCK LOVER BOYS - "At the Baseball Game"
RIK GOLDEN - "Never Again"
THE SNIPPED - "I'm Alright"
THE NE-ER DO WELLS - "Independence Day"

HOUR TWO:

TED McCLOSKEY - "Bigger Bombs"
CONNER GILBERT - "Throw It All Away"
RIK GOLDEN - "Brown Eye Mary"
MEDUSA'S DISCO - "Wherever You Wander"
RIK GOLDEN - "What They Say"
WE ARE FOREVER - "Point Taken" (2008, Local Music Flashback)
RIK GOLDEN - "Cresson Gutter Bums"
RAILROAD CITY MURDER MACHINES - "Butcher"
DRIVE-BY MAGIC SHOW - "Lonely Whale"

We realize that we will once again be up against major competition from the sporting world during next week's show, as the spectacle of football, glitzy halftime shows and hyped-up commercials known as the Super Bowl happens next Sunday night...so we will reprise Super Bowl Sunday tradition on the "Homegrown Rocker," and celebrate the women who make music on the area and state's music scene on the annual "Ladies of Local Music Special!" We'll spotlight some of the many women who write and perform songs, sing, and play guitars, keys, basses, drums, brass instruments, fiddles and more! Along the way, we will update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, and review Jessica Illuzzi's Soul Searcher CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" Listen to the "Homegrown Rocker Ladies of Local Music" Special, this Sunday night (February 2) at 8 p.m. on 105.9 Qwik-Rock on your FM radio dial, or stream it live online at www.1059qwikrock.com!

Upcoming guests and specials:

FEB. 23 - GELATINOUS CUBE
MAR. 1 - CALLIE TOMBLIN
MAR. 8 - MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE RECAP
MAR. 15 - ST. PADDY'S DAY SPECIAL
MAR. 22 - BRADEN McDANNELL

(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

In Local Music News...

One of the state’s prominent musicians during the past three decades is facing a medical hurdle. Bret Alexander was the primary songwriter with Pennsylvania-based national recording group The Badlees, has recorded music as a solo artist and with other projects, has owned and operated Saturation Acres Recording Studio, and has performed at numerous benefit shows over the years to help out other people. Dealing with a genetic kidney disorder, Bret needs a kidney transplant, and with his cousin donating a kidney, that medical procedure will take place soon. But Bret will need several months to recuperate, and will not be able to earn income during that time, plus will be facing medical expenses associated with the procedure. A benefit concert for Bret is being organized and will happen in Wilkes-Barre on April 11, and a GoFundMe web page has been set up for folks who want to donate to help Bret.

And the future of area metalcore rockers It Is Written is up in the air, after an apparent split between the group’s two core members, singer and guitarist Ken Hawkins and drummer Darl Johnstonbaugh, surfaced during the past week. We'll update this situation on the “Homegrown Rocker” as further information becomes available.
