Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the March 15 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

Sadness from the area music world prompted a change in itinerary for this week's program. Following the passing of area music icon Mark Ross on March 11, we turned this week's "Homegrown Rocker" into a two-part program. During the first hour, we did an abbreviated edition of the annual "St. Paddy's Day Special," celebrating area bands, artists and songs with a bit of an Irish flavor in honor of St. Patrick's Day. And during the second hour, we remembered Mark Ross with a full hour of music he helped to create - with Queen Bee & the Blue Hornet Band, Dusk Til Dawn, Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats and more. Along the way, we updated "Local Music News," and music from Queen Bee & the Blue Hornet Band and Dusk Til Dawn served as this week's "Local Music Flashback" features.

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE (ST. PADDY'S SPECIAL):

For our next program, a guest will join us in the studio, as area singer and songwriter Braden McDannel joins us! We'll learn Braden's story and hear songs from his new CD, East & West, and he'll bring his guitar and do a few songs live for us! Along the way, we will update "Local Music News," dig into the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," and review The Jakob's Ferry Stragglers' Poison River CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" Listen to the "Homegrown Rocker," this Sunday night (March 22) at 8 p.m. on 105.9 Qwik-Rock on your FM radio dial, or stream it live online at www.1059qwikrock.com!

In Local Music News...

The local and regional music scenes were saddened during the past week with news of the passing of area guitar great Mark Ross on early Wednesday morning. Mark had been battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer, splenic sarcoma, since being diagnosed last fall. For the past four decades, Mark became known and beloved as a guitarist, educator, producer and music store proprietor. Mark formed Queen Bee & the Blue Hornet Band in 1985 after first meeting singer Tonya Browne as she tended bar at the Brickhouse Tavern in State College. The group separated after 14 years of national and international touring plus several studio and live albums. Mark subsequently joined singer Dawn Kinnard to form the country blues project Dusk Til Dawn, and performed with Tyne Palazzi in the Americana project Tyne & the Fastlyne. After meeting singer Melanie Morrison Zeigler, Mark played guitar with Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats from 2011 until last fall. Mark also owned and operated Alley Cat Music in State College, and authored a children’s audio book called “Mixed Up Morning Blues” in 2010. We will devote the second hour of tonight’s “Homegrown Rocker” in Mark’s memory, and spotlight music he was involved in creating.

In band personnel moves, Scott Jeffreys has stepped on board to play bass with western PA brass funk practitioners Afro N’At.

And guitarist Jarrett Bickel has announced his intention to retire from live performing later this summer, and thus leave the ranks of Altoona-based modern rock band Faded Flowers.
