Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the April 19 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

Thanks to our guest via phone this week, Matthew Deweese! An area musician, Matthew discussed "Altoona's Music Scene," a website resource for the Altoona area music community that provides an outlet for new and lesser-known bands and artists to showcase their original music and network with one another. We featured songs from some of the bands and artists who use "Altoona's Music Scene," and debuted new songs from Chet "Che" Denny, John Peacefire, Faded Flowers, New Trick, Silver Screen, Jakob Vladimir and Bad Economy. We also updated "Local Music News," dug a 1984 song from Dakota from the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," and reviewed Kali Ma & the Garland of Arms' Cusp CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

DAVE DISTEFANO - "Light the Fya, Get Down"
CHRIS VIPOND & THE STANLEY STREET BAND - "Media Controls the World"
CHET "CHE" DENNY - "Hustle Til the Morning"
DAN STONEROOK - "Changing"
JOHN PEACEFIRE - "Hell in a Hand Basket"
FADED FLOWERS - "Unkind"
NEW TRICK - "Time to Pray"
SILVER SCREEN - "Drugs"

HOUR TWO:

DONNY BURNS & THE 3RD DEGREE - "Think You Know"
BREE GEARHART - "Erase the Tragedy"
JAKOB VLADIMIR - "Minefield"
KALI MA & THE GARLAND OF ARMS - "Star Eye"
BAD ECONOMY - "Red Staind Feather"
DAKOTA - "Runaway" (1984, Local Music Flashback)
QUALMS - "Ground"

For our next program, we welcome via phone our guest, singer Doug from southern New Jersey-based rock band Huxley! Huxley's card was the lucky one drawn from the "Homegrown Rocker" dropbox during February's 24th annual Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, so they won their guest interview and appearance on this week's show! Doug will tell us about Huxley, how they got started, their music and live show, and we will hear tracks from the group's self-titled debut EP! Along the way, we will update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, and review Scarlet Moon's Fifth Dimension CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" Listen to the "Homegrown Rocker," this Sunday night (April 26) at 8 p.m. on 105.9 Qwik-Rock on your FM radio dial, or stream it live online at www.1059qwikrock.com!

Upcoming guests and specials:

MAY 10 - JAKOB VLADIMIR
MAY 24 - MEMORIAL DAY SPECIAL

(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

In Local Music News...

More performances, festivals and events have been cancelled or postponed due to the COVID-19 situation and precautions regarding large gatherings.

The organizers of Pittsburgh’s annual Millvale Music Festival have announced that they will postpone this year’s event until later in the summer. The event is being moved from its original date of May 30 to Saturday, August 8.

A well-known name of the northeastern PA music scene passed away on Easter Sunday. Jerry Hludzik, best known for his work with national recording groups The Buoys and Dakota, died after a lengthy battle with dementia. He was 68. After starting his career with several local bands in the Hazleton area, Jerry formed The Buoys with Bill Kelly in 1967. The group recorded the song “Timothy,” written by Rupert Holmes, which became a Billboard Top 20 hit in 1971. After The Buoys broke up, Jerry and Bill formed the Jerry-Kelly Band, which evolved into Dakota, which released two major label record albums and scored some minor radio hits. Jerry leaves behind a wife, a son and a daughter.

And Altoona area musician Jeff Guyer passed away on April 9 at age 64 following an extended illness. Jeff sang and played guitar with a number of area bands, including Take 5, Freebird, Pass Time and The Fabulous Flashbacks. Beyond music, Jeff worked as a paramedic for AMED, and provided nursing services at several area hospitals.

During this difficult time, we at the “Homegrown Rocker” encourage our listeners and area music fans to help out musicians as their livelihoods are on hold and they cannot earn their regular income. Consider visiting their websites to purchase CD’s, music downloads or other merchandise, or make a donation to their virtual “tip jars” when you see artists performing live streaming concerts.[/list]
