Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the May 17 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

We returned to the mailboxes this week to check out some more new local and regional music recordings that have arrived since our last visit, and that resulted in the debut of lots of new music on the program! We introduced new songs from Felix & the Hurricanes, My Hero Zero, Dave Nichols, The Echo and Sway, Callie Tomblin, Norman Nardini and Little Buddy! Along the way, we updated "Local Music News," dug a 2005 song from Blind Jonny Death from the archive for our "Local Music Flashback," and stepped "Across State Lines" to revisit music from New York-based singer and songwriter Chelsea Takami! And we reviewed not one, but TWO albums in "The Professor's CD Corner" this week, checking out Robin and Bob's Leave On CD during the first hour, and Kevin Roy Correll's self-titled CD during the second hour! It was a jam-packed show!

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

BLACK CAT MOAN - "Is What It Is"
BISCUIT JAM - "When I'm Gone"
FELIX & THE HURRICANES - "Beale Street" (live)
BUSHMASTER BLUES feat. GARY BROWN - "The Blues"
MY HERO ZERO - "Speakers"
JIM DONOVAN & THE SUN KING WARRIORS - "Oolalala"
DAVE NICHOLS - "Pieces of You"
ROBIN AND BOB - "Some Will"
THE ECHO AND SWAY - "Mexican War Streets"
MYSTERYTRAIN - "Sway" (live)
CALLIE TOMBLIN - "When Did?"

HOUR TWO:

CHIP & THE CHARGE UPS - "Feel Electricity"
WHITE WITCH - "Running with Scissors"
NORMAN NARDINI - "The Devil"
KEVIN ROY CORRELL - "Victory"
ROCKET LOVES BLUE - "The Great Indoors"
BLIND JONNY DEATH - "Long Way From Home" (2005, Local Music Flashback)
CHELSEA TAKAMI - "Rolla Coas" (Across State Lines)
WILLIAM RYAN - "Flowers from the Fall"
LITTLE BUDDY - "Nelly"
THE COMMONHEART - "Aloysius"

With Memorial Day happening next weekend, that means the 2020 installment of the "Homegrown Rocker" Memorial Day Special! It will be our annual journey down "Local Music Memory Lane," as we check out tunes from past area bands and artists, with an emphasis on songs before the year 2000! We'll hear from some of the prominent area bands of years past, as well as a few lesser-known names! And during the show's last half hour, we will pay homage to some of the musicians we have lost over the years, especially several who have recently passed. Listen to the "Homegrown Rocker" Memorial Day Special, this Sunday night (May 24) at 8 p.m. on 105.9 Qwik-Rock on your FM radio dial, or stream it live online at www.1059qwikrock.com!

Upcoming guests and specials:

JUNE 7 - HOMEGROWN HOMECOMING SPECIAL
JUNE 21 - FATHER'S DAY/FAMILY TRADITION SPECIAL
JULY 5 - COVER SONG SPECIAL

(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

In Local Music News...

An area amusement park’s summer season is the latest casualty of the coronavirus pandemic. Delgrosso’s Amusement Park in Tipton on Friday announced the cancellation of this year’s summer season, citing concern for the health of its employees and visitors, as well as logistical problems because of the disruption of the supply chain, social distancing protocols and capacity restrictions. The park also announced that passes purchased for the 2020 season will be honored in 2021, with $25 food credits given to season pass holders who transfer their 2020 pass over to 2021.

The area music scene mourns the death of William Shawn Gority, who passed away on Tuesday (May 12) at age 60 following a battle with cancer. “Shawn” played the bagpipes and tinwhistle, and frequently sat in with other musicians during jam night situations. More recently, he appeared as a guest during several of Full Kilt’s performances. We at the “Homegrown Rocker” extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and musical colleagues.

And not sitting idle during the coronavirus shutdown, Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors have been busy creating interactive live streaming videos for a few of their songs. The group during the past week unveiled a “home edition” video to their song “Oolalala,” which included home streaming backing vocal contributions from a number of their fans. The video can be found on YouTube. Prior to this, the group did an online collaboration video for their song “You Gotta Believe It.”

During this difficult time, we at the “Homegrown Rocker” encourage our listeners and area music fans to help out musicians as their livelihoods are on hold and they cannot earn their regular income. Consider visiting their websites to purchase CD’s, music downloads or other merchandise, or make a donation to their virtual “tip jars” when you see artists performing live streaming concerts.
