Kool and the Gang’s Ronald 'Khalis' Bell R.I.P.

Ronald "Khalis" Bell, singer and co-founder of Kool & the Gang, died Wednesday at his U.S. Virgin Islands home at age 68, his rep confirmed to multiple outlets.

A cause of death has not been released.

In 1964, Bell and his brother, Robert "Kool" Bell " who were teenagers at the time " formed Kool & the Gang in Jersey City, New Jersey, alongside neighborhood friends Dennis "D.T." Thomas, Charles Smith, George Brown, Robert "Spike" Mickens, and Ricky West.

After initially calling themselves The Jazziacs, the group changed its name several times before settling on Kool & the Gang, performing under monikers including the New Dimensions and the Soul Town Band, according to Variety.

By the 1970s, they had become one of the most popular and celebrated musical groups, blending jazz, soul, funk, rock, and pop music.

Bell co-wrote many of the groups' most notable songs, which include "Ladies’ Night,” "Get Down On It," “Jungle Boogie," "Cherish," and mega hit, "Celebration."

Edna Wright, Honey Cone Singer and Sister of Darlene Love, R.I.P.

Wright began her career singing back-up for Ray Charles and the Righteous Brothers. She released a single in the 1960’s under the stage name Sandy Wynns. Wright formed the R&B girl group Honey Cone in 1969 with Carolyn Willis and Shelly Clark. The group hit number one with the 1971 funk/R&B song “Want Ads” which knocked the Rolling Stones “Brown Sugar” from the top spot. Honey Cone broke up in 1973 after a string of hit singles and Wright would go on to sing back-up for many bands and artists including U2, Cher and Aaron Neville. Wright was the younger sister of popular singer Darlene Love.

Founding Van Halen bass player Mark Stone R.I.P.

Mark Stone, the original bass guitarist in Van Halen, has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Mark Stone was the bassist in the band from 1972 to 1974. The band was called Mammoth at the time, and only changed its name in 1974 after David Lee Roth joined.

The lineup during Stone’s era was himself, Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen, but he was replaced in 1974 by Michael Anthony.

According to the book titled Van Halen Rising: How a Southern California Backyard Party Band Saved Heavy Metal, Stone was asked to leave the band because he was unwilling to sing background vocals.

“I just don’t want to sing by myself anymore,” Eddie Van Halen reportedly told a friend at the time.

His talent on bass was never part of it, says the book, which quotes one of the Van Halens’ childhood friends as saying “Mark Stone was a really good bass player.

“He had really good meter and his sound was wonderful.”

Mark Stone can be heard on demo tracks including ‘Gentlemen Of Leisure’, ‘Angel Eyes’, Believe Me’ and ‘Glitter’.

He featured in the 2003 doco The Van Halen Story: The Early Years, during which he was quoted as saying he was unable to divide his energy between the band and his school work.

“I was split between those two things,” he said. “I just couldn’t keep up with them.”

Eddie Van Halen R.I.P.

Eddie Van Halen -- the legendary guitarist and co-founder of Van Halen -- has died after a long battle with throat cancer ... TMZ has learned.

Sources directly connected to the rock star tell us ... he died at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica Tuesday. His wife, Janie, was by his side, along with his son, Wolfgang, and Alex, Eddie's brother and drummer.

We're told in the last 72 hours Eddie's ongoing health battle went massively downhill -- doctors discovered his throat cancer had moved to his brain as well as other organs.

As you know, Eddie has been battling cancer for well over a decade. Our sources say he's been in and out of the hospital over the past year -- including last November for intestinal issues -- and recently underwent a round of chemo.

Last year we reported ... Eddie was flying between the US and Germany for 5 years to get radiation treatment. Though he was a heavy smoker for years, he believes he developed throat cancer from a metal guitar pick he used to frequently hold in his mouth more than 20 years ago.

Nevertheless, he continued to attend concerts and rehearse music with his son, Wolfgang, who -- if ya don't know -- became Van Halen's bassist in 2006.

Wolfgang mourned his father online, writing ... "He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss." He added, "I love you so much, Pop."

Of course, Eddie himself was considered one of the best and most influential guitarists of all time ... who first made a name for himself with his solo on Van Halen's "Eruption."

Eddie formed the classic rock group in Pasadena in 1972 with his brother, Alex, on drums, Michael Anthony on bass and David Lee Roth singing. Eddie served as the main songwriter on their self-titled debut album in 1978 ... which launched the group into rock superstardom in the '80s.

They went on to pump out hit after hit, including "Runnin' with the Devil," "Unchained," "Hot for Teacher," "Panama" and "Jump" ... and continued their success with Sammy Hagar on lead vocals after the departure of Roth in 1985.

Though some members have changed, the Van Halen bros have been constants ... with Eddie's acclaimed guitar work being the focal point of their legacy.

Van Halen was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, and Eddie is widely considered one the greatest guitar players of all time.

He is survived by his wife Janie and his son.

Eddie was 65.

Country artist Hal Ketchum R.I.P.

Country music singer Hal Ketchum passed away at the age of 67 on Monday night due to complications from dementia, his wife said.

"With great sadness and grief we announce that Hal passed away peacefully last night at home due to complications of dementia," Ketchum's wife, Andrea, confirmed in a post on the late singer's Facebook page and website.

"May his music live on forever in your hearts and bring you peace."

Ketchum, who was known for country music hits such as "Small Town Saturday Night" and "Long Haired Country Boy," released his first album in 1988. He would go on to release 10 more albums, according to his website.

"I've known Hal Ketchum since 1985, when I first booked him at Gruene Hall," Ketchum's longtime friend and personal manager Tracie Ferguson told CNN. "He played his first official gig in the front room of the old Hall for about 25 people. He only had to sing one note for everyone to realize that he had something special and it didn't take long for the country music world to notice him."

Ketchum has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry -- a weekly country music showcase -- since 1994, his website says.

Ketchum would go on to have 15 top 10 singles and five million albums sold, his website says.

In 2010, Ketchum moved to Texas where he would go on to play in theaters and venues such as The Birchmere and Eddie's Attic, Ferguson said. Ketchum was diagnosed with Dementia in 2017, and he played his last show at home on the stage of Gruene Hall, according to Ferguson.

"One thing that stood out about Hal was his continued love for his fans, and he gave as much of himself to them as possible," Ferguson said. "His kindness and sweet spirit will be remembered by everyone who knew or met him."

Charley Pride R.I.P.

Charley Pride, the country singer known for such hits as “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'” and “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone,” has died in Dallas, Texas, from complications related to Covid-19, according to his publicist. He was 86.

Born in Sledge, Mississippi, in 1934, Pride picked cotton, played baseball in the Negro leagues, served in the U.S. Army, and worked in a smelting plant in Montana before moving to Nashville and becoming a country music superstar. He scored 52 Top 10 country hits, including 29 Number Ones. Pride became an Opry member in 1993. In 2000, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

After leaving the Army, Pride landed in Helena, Montana, where he continued to play baseball (Jackie Robinson was an early hero) and took a job in a smelting plant. He also began singing in public, where he caught the ear of a local DJ who arranged for Pride to sing for country stars Red Sovine and Red Foley. The pair convinced him to move to Nashville and, in 1964, he signed a management deal with longtime manager Jack D. Johnson. The following year, he had his first Nashville recording session and, a month later, signed with the label RCA.

K.T. Oslin, the Grammy-winning country singer best known for her 1987 hit “’80s Ladies,” died Monday in Nashville at age 78.

The cause of death was not immediately known, but friend Robert Oermann told the Associated Press that she had tested positive for COVID-19 last week. She had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease and lived in an assisted-living facility since 2016.

Oslin was a late bloomer to the country scene, debuting in her 40s as a singer-songwriter with a distinctly female perspective. In 1988 and 1989, she won back-to-back Grammy Awards for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for “’80s Ladies” and for “Hold Me” " the latter also won Best Country Song.
