Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the January 31 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock!

We continued to explore the mailboxes during this week's program, and unveiled lots more new music! We debuted new tunes from Dave Nichols, Jack Pyers, Tim Woods, Memory Collector, Gelatinous Cube, Afro N'At, Wax Mekanix, Joe Craig, Milpool, X's For Eyes and Seethe. We also updated "Local Music News," dug out a 1999 Groundhog Day-themed number from The Whistlepigs for this week's "Local Music Flashback," stepped "Across State Lines" to hear a song from New York City's Alex Cano, and we reviewed Anthrophobia's Altered States/Grind EP's CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

As we will again be up against competition from that big 'Super' football game, we'll go with our annual Super Sunday tradition and spotlight the women of the area and state music scene with the annual "Ladies of Local Music" Special! We'll celebrate the ladies who write songs, sing, and play guitars, keyboards, fiddles, drums and other instruments on Pennsylvania stages and in the state's recording studios! Along the way, we will update "Local Music News," dig out a "Local Music Flashback," step "Across State Lines" to hear music from an independent band or artist from outside the state, and review Maleena's Bruises to Prove It CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" Hear the "Homegrown Rocker" this Sunday night (February 7) on Q94 Classic Rock - 94.3 FM and online at www.q94classicrock.com!

Upcoming guests and specials:

In Local Music News...

Sad news begins our look at “Local Music News”…LeRoy “Whitey” Noll, the founder and former longtime publisher of Pennsylvania Musician Magazine, passed away on Friday after battling lung cancer and other health issues. He was 79. A musician himself, Whitey created Pennsylvania Musician in 1982 to serve the state’s local music community, and the magazine has been a valued resource to area musicians, music fans and the state’s music industry ever since. Earlier health issues led to Whitey stepping back from his work with the magazine several years, and his wife, Robin took over. She passed the reins over to their son, Josh Noll, in 2019. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Whitey’s wife, Robin, their daughters Rachel and Andrea, and Josh, as well as Whitey’s many friends and colleagues over the years. A special tribute to Whitey will be presented on the February 14 edition of the “Homegrown Rocker.”

The Palace Theatre in Greensburg has begun a new free live-streaming concert series that is taking place through February and March. The Virtually in the Palace (VIP) Experience began this past Thursday, and will continue each Thursday evening through March 25, with a different western PA-based band or artist performing each night. The concerts begin at 7 p.m., and can be viewed through The Palace Theatre and Westmoreland Cultural Trust Facebook pages. Pittsburgh-based folk artist Lindsay Dragan kicked off the series this past Thursday (Jan. 28); scheduled upcoming performers include Essential Machine this coming Thursday evening, followed by Habatat, the Tim Vitullo Band, the Derek Woods Band, East Coast Turnaround, Colin Southfield & the Mushroom Country Band, and Pack.

And congratulations to the Derek Woods Band, who captured top honors for Americana/Folk/Acoustic Song Of The Year for their song “Unforgiving Tree” during this past Wednesday’s Hollywood Music in Media Awards. The song was from the group’s latest EP, The Question, which came out in 2019. According to its website, Hollywood Music in Media is “the first award organization to honor original music in all visual media from around the globe including film, TV, video games, trailers, commercial advertisements, documentaries and special programs.” And although it didn’t win top honors, Zupe’s Christmas polka “Dasher, the Reindeer” was one of the songs nominated for the HMMA’s Best Holiday Song.
