Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the June 5 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock!

Thanks to our guests via phone this week, guitarist Mike Moscato and singer Stacey Ess of Pittsburgh hard rock group Sahayra! We learned about the group; discussing their career to date, their music and live show, and we heard tracks from their forthcoming EP! We also debuted new songs from Cass & the Bailout Crew, Above The Radar, The Mile Hill Band, OK Otter and Bill Dann & Denny Pompa; also updated "Local Music News," dug a 2002 number by Coalport's Bleech from the archive for this week's "Local Music Flashback," stepped "Across State Lines" to check out a tune from former area musician Garrison Bailey (now based in San Diego, California) and reviewed Halestorm's Back From the Dead album in "The Professor's CD Corner!" (For those who missed the program, a four-part podcast of this show is available for listening or download from Q94's website, www.q94classicrock.com. Click on "The Professor's Classroom," and then scroll down to "Homegrown Rocker Podcast" and look for the four show segments marked with the date, 060522.)

In Local Music News...

The annual Pennsylvania Heritage Songwriting Contest has announced its 2022 winners, and a song called “Altoona” took top honors. Two railroad-themed songs by Perry Artese, half of the Philadelphia-based duo Artese & Toad, captured first and second place " the song “Altoona” took first place, while “Ghost on the Track” won second place. Third place went to Bruce Hoffman of Munhall for his song, called “Homestead Revisited.” The Pennsylvania Heritage Songwriting Contest was created to celebrate the state of Pennsylvania, its people, landmarks and history in song, and three song entries are selected each year. This year’s winners will have the opportunity to perform their winning songs on the main stage on Saturday, June 18 during the upcoming Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival at Quiet Oaks Campground near Cross Fork. The winners also win cash prizes and full passes to the festival, which happens from June 17-19.

And we report sad news from the Altoona area music scene with the recent passing of Jeff Smith on May 20. He was 56. Jeff was an early lead singer for popular 1990s Altoona-based rock band Bottoms Up. He is survived by a daughter.
