Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the September 4 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock!

As the Labor Day holiday weekend is when we honor the nation's workers, we decided to debut the first-ever "Musician Double-Vision Special," where we shined the spotlight on the area's "work-aholic" musicians who are involved in two or more bands or projects! (There are a lot of them; don't be surprised if this becomes a regular Labor Day weekend special!) We also updated "Local Music News," and spoke via phone with Mike Hype, an organizer of the upcoming 3rd annual Homegrown Music Festival in Johnstown! Mike gave us the lowdown on the event, which takes place September 10 at Johnstown's Lorain Boro Park! (For those who missed the program, a four-part podcast of this show is available for listening or download from Q94's website, www.q94classicrock.com. Click on "The Professor's Classroom," and then scroll down to "Homegrown Rocker Podcast" and look for the four show segments marked with the date, 090422.)

Here is this week's playlist (with spotlighted musicians in parentheses):

We'll also update "Local Music News," dig out a "Local Music Flashback," step "Across State Lines" to hear music from an independent band or artist from outside the state, and review the Jukehouse Bombers' Joyland CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" The event will feature performances from the bands Less Than Zero, Grampian, Hardtack, Public Execution, the BS Express and Powder Keg Culture, along with solo performer Steve Kirsch. Popular local entertainer Zupe has joined up with Grammy-nominated accordionist Alex Meixner to acquire a publishing company that specializes in polka music. According to a press release, the two musicians are taking ownership of Music Publishers of America, which includes the historic Vitak-Elsnic music catalog, considered the world's premier publisher of American polka music. The company holds nearly 1,000 registered copyrights on original compositions, arrangements and lyrics, setting the standard for the genre. With their acquisition, Zupe and Alex hope to preserve and promote the musical works, raise the awareness for polka music and expand its audience.

A new independent record label recently launched in the Altoona area. Three members of the area arts and music community and their respective businesses have joined forces to form Dark Raven Records. Tomrisha Shanice of High Profile Talent Agency and Sascha Frost ofDeus Ex Machina are joining Phil Wagner of Dark Raven recording studio to form the venture. Dark Raven Records will record and work with do-it-yourself independent local musicians, and help them distribute and promote their music.
