Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the March 5 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock (www.q94classicrock.com), and from 10 PM to midnight on 107.1 and 101.3 Jack FM (www.1071jack.fm)!

It all began on Sunday evening, March 8, 1998 as a one-hour local music program called the "Backyard Rocker" debuted on Q94 94.3 FM, at that time housed in a residential structure at 40th Street and 5th Avenue in Altoona, which we nicknamed "The House That Rock Built!" The addition of a second hour in 1999, plus hundreds of bands and artists, thousands of songs, one name change, three jumps between radio stations and 25 years later, the show is still going strong with the station where it all began, now Q94 Classic Rock! We partied hardy and celebrated 25 years of the "Homegrown Rocker" on this week's program, sharing a few memories from the program, and bringing back the popular "Acoustic Jam Special" for the first time since 2010! We welcomed Jeff Perigo & 'Friend' (percussionist Kraig Maldette), Lauren and Joe George (Lauren & Joe Acoustic), and Mama Corn (Jeremy Nelson, Johnny Stevens, Bruce Forr and Bryan Homan) - all three groups did short interviews and played mini-sets for the first part of the program, and then all got together in the same studio to cut loose and jam out on several common songs! Hopefully it was as fun for you, the listeners, as it was for us in the studio! We celebrated a quarter-century of "Homegrown Rocker" on the area's radio airwaves! (For those who missed the program, a four-part podcast of this show is available for listening or download from Q94's website, www.q94classicrock.com. Click on "The Professor's Classroom," and then scroll down to "Homegrown Rocker Podcast" and look for the four show segments marked with the date, 030523.)

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

FELIX & THE HURRICANES - "Backyard Rocker Rocks" (a song the Hurricanes created about this program from their 2003 album Travelers Not Forgotten. The Hurricanes were the first band guests on the program, joining us as guests in the studio on March 22, 1998!)

("ALL-STAR ACOUSTIC JAM") - "Ace Of Spades" (live on the air 3/13/05) (As we brought back the "Acoustic Jam Special" this week, we flashed back to one of the most memorable of the earlier "Acoustic Jam Special" programs from March 13, 2005, as guests Dave Distefano, John Charney, Denny Owens, Rick Ramsey, Dwane Edmiston, Jeremy Nelson, Johnny Stevens and possibly one or two others cut loose on an 8-minute acoustic version of this Motorhead classic - the laughter at the end before they closed the song showed how much fun these guys had improvising on this beast rendition!)

(JEFF PERIGO AND KRAIG MALDETTE - performed live in the studio:)
"Breakfast in America" (Supertramp)
"Writing Songs" (original song)
"I've Been All Around This World" (traditional/Grateful Dead)

THE EXTRA MILES - "Galaxy" (live on 1/7/23 at the LaunchPad in Philipsburg)
BREE GEARHART - "Cabin on Clark"

(LAUREN & JOE ACOUSTIC - performed live in the studio:)
"She Talks to Angels" (Black Crowes)
"Landslide" (Fleetwood Mac/Dixie Chicks)
"Please Don't Bury Me" (John Prine)

THE GROOVE JUNKIES - "Justice" (1997, Local Music Flashback) (A song played on the first "Backyard Rocker" program; we shared the story about a dilemma that occurred when the Groove Junkies wanted to perform live during their guest appearance on the July 5, 1998 edition of the "Backyard Rocker." There were five musicians in the studio, but only four inputs into our broadcast console to run all the microphones and instruments through. We devised an idea that solved the problem, running Ryan O'Neill's keyboard through the studio's reel-to-reel tape recorder with the recorder set on "record," which allowed the keyboard to be brought through the tape channel on the console - it worked, and the Groove Junkies performed four songs live on the program, including "Justice!")

HOUR TWO:

EDISON - "Breaking" (1997, Local Music Flashback) (The very first song we played on the first "Backyard Rocker" program was this one...Altoona's Edison had recently issued their first full-length album, Picture Postcard, on Kinetic/Reprise Records, and had generated lots of excitement on the Altoona area music scene by achieving a national record deal.

(MAMA CORN - performed live in the studio:)
"I Have a Song" (original song)
"Fearless" (Pink Floyd)
"The Hanging of Alfred Andrews" (original song)
"We Bid You Goodnight" (traditional/Grateful Dead)

(ACOUSTIC JAM WITH ALL MUSICIANS - performed live in the studio:)
"Deep Elem Blues" (traditional)
"Mama's Broken Heart" (Miranda Lambert)
"My Girl" (traditional)
"Driving My Life Away" (Eddie Rabbitt)
"Paradise" (John Prine)
"I Know You Rider" (traditional)

As said during the program, the real fuel behind the "Homegrown Rocker" during its first 25 years has been the strength and quality of the area musicians and their musical creations. Hopefully during this program's time on the air, we have shown to the listeners of central PA and beyond what a wealth of musical talent we have here. It can be clearly be seen every weekend on the area's stages, and heard on the "Homegrown Rocker" through the music we play. THANK YOU to all of the musicians and bands who have submitted their music for us to air each week, as well as joined us on the program as guests. We'll keep doing this thing on the airwaves (and internet waves) every Sunday night for as long as we can! Keep making the music, and we'll keep on playing it! As our guest musicians exclaimed to close out this week's 25th anniversary program..."SAAH-LUTE!!!"

As we begin year number 26, we welcome a returning guest on our next program, as Altoona native-turned-Pittsburgh-based music innovator Don Hughes visits our studio! Don recently issued two new albums - his new original music album called Universal Language, and his new album of video game music interpretations called The Gaming Jukebox! Don will discuss both albums plus his career and musical aspirations. We'll also update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, and review The Badlees' self-titled album in "The Professor's CD Corner!" Hear the "Homegrown Rocker" this Sunday night (March 12) on Q94 Classic Rock - 94.3 FM and online at www.q94classicrock.com, and on 107.1 and 101.3 Jack FM, online at www.1071jack.fm!
